Concert Review: Temples Create A Time Warp At Webster

Frankly, I was surprised by Temples performance at Webster Hall because it felt incredibly fluid and even commercial. I KNOW! Some artists put vampire fangs at the idea of being “mainstream” or “commercial,” but those terms are not, necessarily, bad or even about marketing. There was a time where Adele was called and considered non-commercial, and it wasn’t that she changed her sound as much as the world changed what they sought. Frankly, I think the world is getting more “psychedelic” or, at least, if this 2020 is going to be a bad trip then we should get trippy, and Temples does that!
Temples – Hot Motion (Official Music Video)

Their music absolutely flowed with tracks like, “The Howl,” “The Golden Throne,” and “Atomise.” Each chord felt like a building block to a fortress that 100% kept the outside world OUT. Personally, I love psych-rock because it, inherently, feels imaginative. Of all the times I have seen Temples perform, this show felt like their most confident and concise display of their vision. With a few smiles and jokes tossed into the crowd, each member played with a focus and precision of a mental, construction worker; using guitars like hammers and strings like nails to make sure people felt solid.
Temples – You’re Either On Something (Official Video)

Temples is a unique show because, for however you may sway or give an occasional head bang, it feels like mental yoga. People closed their eyes and bobbed their head as if Temples was a visual experience that gained entrance through their ears to the movie in their mind. Moreover, I have never seen a show more ripped from the set of Almost Famous than Temples. Men with long hair, fur coats, multiple necklaces and rings, and 23 cigarette breaks aligned the venue as if Stillwater was playing. It was a total “that 70’s show/ backstage at a Led Zeppelin” concert vibe, and I loved it because it made their space feel specific to them; as if to go to a Temples show is as much a time warp as it is a sonic one.
