Concert Review: The Avalanches Show Me What FUN Means At Music Hall Of Williamsburg
Sometimes, we need a sparking reminder that life can be fun. Seeing The Avalanches live was the reminder I did not know I needed. From beginning to end, they served an epic energy that explained why their Music Hall of Williamsburg show was sold out. They splash adrenaline like a priest splashes holy water; you walk away feeling blessed .
The Avalanches – Because I’m Me
The Avalanches are a high-octane guarantee in part because of their rapper and drummer, Eliza Wolfgramm and Paris Jeffree. I could not stop watching these ladies because they offered their body, heart, and sould to the stage. Eliza grabbed a bat and swung it around as if she was hitting home-run verses into the crowd. She danced and dazzled with “too cool for school” swag they left everybody wondering how they could, personally, leave such a powerful impression. Eliza approaches the stage how we all wish we approached job interviews and the first steps to our dream: with candor and confidence. She had no ego; just a real, fiery self-assurance, which is matched by the best drummer alive, Paris Jeffree. With a gold glitter cap, she pracitcally used every bit of her body to play. I kept on waiting for her swinging hair, feet, lips, and nose to grab a drum-stick and begin bashing the percussive from how much force she did and, seemingly, needed to release. Paris plays the drums as if it is a life-line she needs to keep to ignite her spirit. Her riff-off during “Frontier Psychiatrist” was so enthralling, I felt as beaten as her drum. Every pounce and punch of her percussion carried a knock-out energy that I feel compelled to elaborate, along with Eliza’s performance, because it was so physical. Meanwhile, fellow rapper, Spank Rock, has a chill, charming presence. As he flows his rhymes like he is spewing fresh mints for us to taste, he never stops connecting with the crowd. He points and dances with everyone as if he genuinely knew them which only made people smile and dance harder. For all the shows I see, rarely do people “get down” quite like in The Avalanches’ show.
The Avalanches – Frankie Sinatra
From “Frankie Sinatra” to “Subways”, which were my favorite tracks, I could not deny the brilliance of The Avalanches production. They know how to make a beat and hook like they more so a bait and hook for their listeners. Robbie Chater and Tony Di Blasi created The Avalanches nearly two decades ago. With rotating members, it took them 16 years to release the incomparable, new record, Wildflower. While both take a back drop to Eliza, Paris, and Spank Rock, I could not help but admire that genius knows how to place its work for admiration even if they do not place themselves. There songs were as rhythmically splendid as they were eccentric. The only connection each track had to the other, in sound, is they demanded body movement and trippy imagination. As I watched these dynamic personalities splash across the stage, I was happy to have The Avalanches back. For being gone for so long, this sold-out show explained why they were worth the wait.
