Concert Review: The New Tarot Make A Coven At Bowery Ballroom
There is no denying that The New Tarot love magic. If this duo came out of AHS coven with crystals and Stevie Nicks covers, I would not be surprised. Yet, you cannot deny the power of the witch. Throughout human history, there have been legends of powerful women who could summon and draw energy to submit to their whims. You can either react in fear to such women, or choose to rock out with them like, The New Tarot.
Led by Monika and Karen Walker, the sisters show the duality of magic. Behind her keyboards, Karen gives a warm, cool presence, and when she sings it is supple and satisfying like, drops of sweet milk. Monika sings more, and sweeps the stage with an energy that could make a hurricane out of half a cup of water. She jumps, screams, swishes, and swoops down as if music possesses her; having a voice that feel like a thunderous call to claim your power. Thus, she embraces the “witch” persona; treating songs like “Stella,” “Tell Me You Like Me,” and “America” as if they are spells casting truths on love, life, and society.
You cannot really place The New Tarot in a music genre, which is why they usually fall in to the vast encompassing “indie rock.” Yet, there is something artfully punk about their sound. It could be because they sing to confronting life rather than dissecting or discussing it. While, of course, you need to do the latter, we live in a world that could be entrapped into believing acknowledging a problem is acting as a resolution. The New Tarot take action with voices that feel made by the elements of environmental nature to sing upon the human one. With arrangements ranging from uproarious to harmonious, the duo bring out interpretive dancers to enlighten that their music is meant to move your soul through this material, but temporary world.
