Concert Review: Tidus Uses Passion And Prayer At S.O.B’s

Tidus is a cross between sacred and seditious. He approaches his verses as if they are his prey, and he is the predator ready to tear into them for all their emotional meat, messaged bones, and any false fiber that could shroud his search for truth. At S.O.B’s his followers showed up and proved a career is nothing if not an upwards climb.

With his symbol blasting behind him and a leopard, head scarf molded like a crown of thorns, Tidus felt casually prodigious. He, literally, came from the crowd unto the stage, yet he sets up his set as if his music was a brand, which it is! Branding can be seen as “selling out” or a negative, but it is really about structuring your art to conciseness: not confinement. It is as if he is putting his world in a treasure box, and, the minute that bassline drops, the chest opens and every spirit locked in with his gold is released.

If there is one thing I liked about Tidus as a performer, it was his focus. He closes eyes, and, practically, prays before a song. He stands meditative, for millisecond,s until he finally lunges into a song, literally. He leaps forward to spits verses that range from socio-political to spiritually redefining. He waltzes and swerves through the stage as if swag was not a presence but a motion. Witnessing his connection to his own music was an example of artist determination, and a reminder of how much people want to create music for a living. This world is no joke, and Tidus sees rapping as prophesying.

Hip Hop can be a lot of things because it is a historical, cultural, and global phenomena. That kind of power allows it to be limitless in scope, but Tidus brings forth Hip Hop’s philosophical, centered energy. For however much his music may bounce with fun and vibrancy, he remains founded in balance; trying to show a soul can be marketed in riches and realness. For More Information On Tidus Click Here.
