Concert Review: Tori Kelly Is A Soulful Leader At King’s Theatre

For Tori Kelly her songs are her stories; each one, literally, being born in an experience she had. Now on her Acoustic Sessions Tour, she is taking the opportunity to tell fans everything that makes her sing for them. From conversations with an “Actress” to the frustrations of being an industry vet at age 26, Tori’s life has been a whirlwind of tales that felt right at home in King’s Theatre.

King’s Theatre is like the Radio City Music Hall of Brooklyn. Its golden, ornate awnings clashes beautifully with the dancing lights that paraded on its ceiling to reflect Tori’s emotional waves. On this tour, she truly tries to reveal who she is as a person, and she is someone that can be happy and sad, all at once. For her, this is what makes her a songwriter, and has become her shield for those that do not believe her. As a person that feels all, she can be all, of which medleys of her first album’s tracks and even gospel songs like, “Never Alone” and “Psalm 42,” played well to a crowd that either believed in God, believed in love, or wanted to believe both were capable within them.

Tori Kelly – Never Alone ft. Kirk Franklin (Lyric Video)

Never in my life have a seen such a diverse age group, nor an amass of people stand up so quickly for someone, but Tori makes you rise. Vocally, Tori riffs through notes like gift wrapping paper she is tossing, packing, and ripping across the room. The beauty of her voice matched with the vast theater to remind people how good it is to be able to sing. In an industry that focuses on image,Tori Kelly’s voice proves that simple talent is enough. It as if her voice is a sea of colors, and every member of the audience chose what memory to paint in their minds that related to Tori’s pain, love, and strength. She represents pop music’s ability talks about feeling bad while not looking or sounding like it.

Tori Kelly – Change Your Mind (Audio)

“Coffee,” “Unbreakable Smile,” “I Was Made For Loving You,” and “Change Your Mind” were amongst the unreleased and Tori classics that were played. Each one making the crowd stand, sway, and smile like palm trees under a sunny wind. For the audience, Tori represented that life hands everyone tough battles and confusing decisions, but, some of us, still want to keep going and smiling. Though we may cry at our losses, we still want to work to gain better or be happier. That level of spiritual connection reverberated across King’s Theatre to turn it into a temple of sorts, and Tori Kelly a soulful leader for those trying to figure a bit of Heaven when times are hell.
