Concert Review: Torres Has A “New Skin” At LPR
In life, when a dream comes true, you are tested to see if you are true to the dream. It is as if the goals you set for yourself are really relationship choices you are making with “you”, i .e. “I will be happy when “this” happens!” For Torres, being the truest you is being the happiest you, but,as you grow, so will your definition of joy.
If there is one thing Torres does NOT want you to consider her to be, it’s as a sad artist. She laughed that most people think she is depressed based on her songs, but she simply transfers joy into a mood and, at times, a question over what really makes you happy if nothing is easy or perfect. From relationship love to self-love, tracks like, “New Skin,”Honey,” “Righteous Woman,” and a few new ones had Torres singing to acceptance being as integral to happiness as wonder. You have to dream big while accepting the smaller, unplanned details that wedge into your vision. More importantly, you have to accept when “the dream” isn’t you, at least, anymore.
From her end with her label to her crush on a cruise masseuse, Torres’ music is an intimate and rich representation of her history. She has a dry wit that leaves you giggling, and an open mind that leaves her swirling in “What ifs?” This leads to her songs feeling like melodic summations of her internal quests. Such a vibe is especially evident with how Torres moves her body and voice. Physically, she bounces and twitches in place as if each rhythm and verse were jolting from her; making verses that are particularly emotional standout physically. Meanwhile, vocally, she sulks and silks her lyrics as if she does not know whether her emotions are soft or rough upon her heart’s skin.
What made Torres show so exciting is that it felt like the inauguration of a new era in her career. She felt more confident in the fact that she will struggle and be insecure, but is happy to know that she is strong enough to survive and learn every way she can be happy.
