Concert Review: Kat Edmonson Is A Classic Star At LPR

Petite, pixie, and powerful, Kat Edmonson felt like an “old world” star at Le Poisson Rouge. She reminded of the days when Judy Garland and Debbie Reynolds would tour the country to give their “night of music”; entertaining with their voices as much as their stories. Lord knows! Edmonson has stories.

I laughed too much with Edmonson. Song after song was followed by stories of how her life went wrongfully right or rightfully wrong. Honestly, who has a horrible time in Paris? Edmonson did! Yet, her allure was that she felt like she was running into life, including her talent. Her humorous and haphazard nature drew a crowd that was both old an young. She was a Millennial songstress living her cabaret dreams, which is why she carried an “Audrey Hepburn” gracefulness. Edmonson makes you want to get breakfast with her at Tiffany’s; yet it shows how she can give elegance to life’s comedic mishaps.

For Kat Edmonson, when the “muse” comes she cannot stop it. It is as if a bell rings in her head to say, “Come Get Inspired!” Celebrating her newest album, Old Fashioned Gal, there was a retro glam to her vocality; sounding as if Rosemary Clooney and Patsy Cline made a vocal tea with Kristin Chenoweth, and she drank it. The way she could summon their legendary nature, and then discuss trouble streaming a movie was enthralling. Yet, the band felt like an aperitif. Songs were prolonged for cello, drum, or guitar solos; each one cleansing your musical palate and making you appreciative of how sophisticatedly detailed “old fashioned” music was. People sporadically stood from their seat to applaud because they felt the winding beauty of songs like, “A Voice”, “Paris In Heart”,”I’d Be A Fool”, and “Old Fashioned Gal”.

Both magical and mischievous, Kat Edmonson made LPR feel like it was a hidden, prestigious jazz club in the 1950’s. Only the “creme de la creme” knew about her or this moment, which is why she is a concert to feel present and wonderfully vintage, all at once. Click Here For More Information On Kat Edmonson.
