Concert Review: The California Honeydrops Are A Holy Union In NY

I am sincerely convinced that Soul, as a genre, makes you love people. It makes sense because it is a genre about love, for better or worse, which makes its fans feel like family. The California Honeydrops (CAH) understand this, which is why their Bowery Ballroom show was a literal party. I can call it a “concert”, but the crowd was as entertaining and welcoming as the band.

I kept on thinking that I was at a wedding because the dancing joy and harmony in the ambiance felt like we were watching a holy union. People were buzzed; hugging, laughing, cheering, and singing along as if life began and ended at CAH’s concert. Even the band felt blissful in their unison with Lech Wierzynski leading the groovy charge. This is guy is a charmer, and he knows it, which makes him dangerously cool. Thank GOD he became an awesome singer of jazz, blues, and soul because he could have easily become a con-man or politician. Instead, he chose to do something for the people (lol!).

Wierzynski has a naturally flirtatious, charismatic nature, which makes him a cross between Stevie Wonder’s vocal twin and an MC. He looks at crowd like a host saying, “Are you ready for the ride!” Yet, everyone in that audience knew what they were in for, which is why they gave into the night’s, crossed atmosphere between Thanksgiving family reunion and a formal, New Orleans symphony. The CAHs were sophisticated and finessed in their Mardi Gras style; as if they had learned a proper formula to make people lose their minds with fun. Hence, its difficult to encompass how great and unique their show is; fun does not have too many synonyms because it is something you simply know when its happening.
The California Honeydrops: Call It Home

“Boisterous”, “merry”, and “highly amusing”… I guess I can use these apt words to define The California Honeydrops. Yet, they are an experience. Walking in, I saw their “Sold Out” sign, and, walking out, I understood why. Their good vibes are amplified by a crowd of fans that want to radiate the same towards each other. Thus, tonight, at Music Hall of Williamsburg, CHECK THEM OUT! For More Information On The California Honeydrops Click Here.
