Concert Review: Totally Mild Sing To Self- Esteem At Rough Trade

Totally Mild feel like Ladybird at a Texas Prom. Honestly, if Greta Gerwig needed an album to soundtrack the pains and promises of being a young woman, Her, would be it. Yet, I did not have the full realization until I saw Totally Mild at Rough Trade, witnessed Elizabeth Mitchell’s power as a lead singer serenading your sincere desire to be kind to yourself for a change.

I do not know many women that find themselves beautiful inside and out, and, a lot of times, the rare ones that do, are actually just vain. An arrogant sense of self cannot truly be called self-esteem nor a genuine, felt bond with your beauty. Yet, in times torn between falsity and authenticity, how we reach for the latter sparkles forward in tracks like “Lucky Stars”, “Pearl”, and “Today Tonight” like diamonds that chose to get themselves out of their “rough”. It is a perfect image when you think of how hard it is for anyone, but particularly women, to shine through the “dirt” they throw on their own looks, thoughts, and voices.

Mitchell’s voice taps into your ears like water being gently turned on. She is so clear, natural, and needed as a voice that says, “You are okay, and that is actually great!”. Okay should not be diminished as good place to be, especially if you are trying to get better like in, “From One Another”. I realized this as I swayed over melodies that, again, felt like a prom in Texas; twinkling under guitar heat, lyrically youthfulness, and an analysis on your honest naivety over how much you are worth. Also, the fluffy, off the shoulder blue top she wore furthered the dancing, bareness of their melody. In literal fashion and music style, Totally Mild represented feeling mild when, in actuality, you are bright.

I really like Totally Mild. More than music, they show that “self-destruction” is not this dark, chaotic path. When you think of that term, you think of drugs, sex, and bad life choices. Yet, Totally Mild remind you that self-destruction also means not enjoying or loving yourself; always hacking your day with an emotional hatchet to make sure that even how you drink coffee becomes an insecurity. It was a quick and surprisingly deep lesson on true confidence for a set that felt too fast, but was just right to combat the Monday Blues and leave people wanting more from them.
