Concert Review: Tunde Olaniran Is A Dance-Twirl King At Terminal 5

Tunde Olaniran is WOKE! Yet, more importantly, he is awaking you, and giving you life through sound. Yes, he is an activist from Flint, Michigan, and yes, he creates art installations beyond his concerts. Yet, for a night at Terminal 5, he was a DANCE KING!

In perspective, art and activism are fun because they are used to defend love, and love is everything good that is shared between people. From kisses to laughter and, of course, music and dance, everything that is wonderful about life involves people coming together. While every performer wants to bring unity amongst a crowd, Tunde is so aware of this purpose that he becomes the living embodiment of harmony. With his backup dancers, he twirls, twerks, twilights, and twinges fabulosity into his every move, and you love it. Yet, his greatest attribute is his voice.

Playing of his newest album, Stranger, Tunde’s voice felt epically gorgeous and piercing. Live, his music’s danceability is unstoppable. All you want to do is move your body like you are the lead in on of the next sequels to Step Up. For being an album about humanity, universality, and protest, in performance, it is all about grabbing your guy or lady, and dancing as if no one is watching. Part of this effect derives from Tunde have a wide-ranging, gospel-like voice that was like hearing Whitney on a Dance Remix. Imagine that!

Powerful vocalists mixed in with incredible rhythms is deliciously appealing. Often, we side fantastic vocalists with slow-burning ballads and uproarious spirituals, but the EDM/ Pop- Dance world should welcome powerful singers, like Tunde Olaniran, because they make you dance in body and spirit. He gave everything to that stage, from motion to aesthetic, and, oddly, made me feel like I was watching the quintessential essence of NYU Tisch. Yes, that is random, but there were a lot of NYU students at the show, and Tunde represented what we teach them: how to transform personal, creative purpose into a massively appealing, important message.
