Concert Review: Valentino Khan Is One of The Best DJ’s Around

Having worked with Skrillex, Diplo, and Steve Aoki, the top DJ’s of the world, Valentino Khan fits right in with these elites. Usually, when you work with the best, it is because you have become one of them. Blending Hip Hop and Caribbean flavors into his soup of Trap sound, the DJ turned Christmas at Terminal 5 into a tropical paradise.

There is no denying that it is cold in NYC. Waiting on the line, you saw the big coats, thick scarves, knit mitts, and fluffy hats, but the minute you entered Khan’s set; the shirts were off. Ladies were wearing everything between yoga pants and lingerie, while guys were shirtless but still managed to wrap lit Christmas lights around themselves. Inside, you would not think we were surrounded by winter, but Khan is NOT a Winter DJ, which is why his set was so good. He was like a break from the cloudiness and earlier nights by meshing top Hip Hop, Reggaeton, Classic Salsa/ Bachata hits with trap/ electronica. It was like putting a Spanish orchestra in a Nutri-Bullet, and asking the people to dance…. AND THEY DID! I have never seen so many break-dancing competitions breakout within a crowd. I have seen voguing and moshing, but the sporadic pits of dance-offs was a true delight! Yet, Valentino Khan was NOT behind in bringing his own moves.

From pointing at the night-sky like he was shooting for a home-run to stepping on his mix-table and bouncing through air like he was a home-run himself, Valentin Khan played and presented himself like a champ. Out of all the DJ sets of that night, he was, definitely, the funnest. From the images that displayed behind him to the way the crowd reacted to him, Khan has an inherent vibrancy and even luxury to his sound. It is as if he is using golden palm trees to make his music, and every golden leaf is celled with digi-beats that make you feel like the tropics are not a location as much as a presence.
