Concert Review: Vallis Alps Make Simplicity Feel Epic At Music Hall of Williamsburg

On a super rainy day in NYC, a group of concert-goers had a love spell cast over them, and the magical culprits are Vallis Alps. As the water from Heaven poured, inside Music Hall of Williamsburg we stood amazed at the electric simplicity of this starry duo. Their synth pop is so pristine in sound and arrangement that it feel like a cleanse for your heart, and Parissa Tosif’s wanderlust vocals make you understand how a music hall can be a doorway to love.
Vallis Alps – Oceans

Love! It is the most beautiful, crazy, empowering, and annoying thing we have all had the pleasure to endure. I obsessed with the enlightening nature of love, and am convinced that it is its loss that leaves us so imbalanced. After all, you cannot help but feel regret, remorse, and reproach for something that lifts you, and then decides to leave you. Yet, Vallis Alps make these ever-present dynamics of love feel like a contemporary dance. Through every down-tempo a ballerina pirouettes, every synth-wave is her arm stretching in grace, and every bass-line is a plie into one’s innermost feelings. When you hear the delicacy of their music booming in a concert hall, you cannot help but go inward. Tosif’s voice pulls you in as if your heart is made of sentimental quicksand, and her voice of is the gentle grains that pile to form it. Her voice is so simple and clear that I wish it were, literally, life. Yet, the irony of Tosif’s performance, is that she presents her notes and lyrics as if she is belting them at The Met Opera. She sways her body and feelings with the subtle grandeur you would expect from the lead an Italian opera like, La Boheme. I mention this because she presents softness and genuine connection as if they are quiet epics; thousands of pages of poetic adventure. With just the lighting on stage, and the music cases to hold the mix-tables of David Ansari, who is rolling and shelling out sounds like a dream ATM for your ears. As Tosif sings and swoons the love like it is surging through, he keeps to his music center like a genius that refuses to leave his room until he finishes his masterpiece.
Vallis Alps – Fading

Much credit has to be given to Vallis Alps energy and presentation on stage because making simplicity feel as intriguing as complexity is no easy feat. It is safe to say that this world has a growing addiction to drama. From entertainment to environments, it seems like humanity surrounds itself with tension over tenderness because, in a way, chaos seems to have “more” happening, but more does not mean much. Songs like, “Oceans”, “East”, and “Serity” felt like they were cozy, warmers passed around in the air to keep us toasted from the rainy chill, and it worked! Once you hear and see Vallis Alps live, you will understand/ expand your definition of “standing out” because they make less feel like a feast, and love like a revolving river; circling you again and again till you learn to float in its purity.
