Concert Review: Vanessa Zamora Tornaluna At Rough Trade
I love feeling like someone will go so far. You watch them use their talent and a hope/ intuitive sense begins to rise within you that this is the beginning of their rising journey.There may not have been 20 million people at Rough Trade for the opener’s opener, Vanessa Zamora, but her performance, inevitably, solidified that she will get them.
Playing off her record Tornaluna, Zamora’s music is so on point for every time you looked back on toxic relationships, goals, and choices. She plays to the moments of silence, when we internally declare that, next time, we will have a “voice”. Next time, we will not be so submissive, insecure, or presuming that everyone was so aware of our feelings in the same way we were aware of theirs. I could, completely, relate, and know that so many people have been the “giver” to a “taker.” With this in mind, Vanessa delivered a passionate, lovely performance that showed simplicity is power.

Technically, Zamore was just a young woman with a guitar. With only a spotlight and a microphone in front of her, she felt supernatural. A human embodiment of the mysticism called: Heartbreak. Our love lives, literally, mold our spiritual life; with every romantic disappointment and/or euphoric connection either putting our souls through hell or elevating us to Heaven. Zamora was honest that she suffered from depression, and many songs came as a cathartic response to feeling like there was no answer to her sadness. Sometimes, life/ people suck, and your tears stream in frustration for not being able to comprehend it. Yet, Zamora has a voice that makes your frustration clear by pushing you to accept it is okay if it is murky.

Zamora is so casually funny, and her voice twirls and twinkles like a gypsy adorned with rubies. Her personality sparkles and her mind brightens as every song embodies or is preceded by the memories that founded them. Such a dynamic culminates when she sings, and her body moves as if synchronized with her heart’s wonders and wishes.
