Concert Review: Wale Goes Hard In Brooklyn Steel
Going into Wale’s show I was unsurprised by how 90’s the ambiance felt: after all, he has a mixtape inspired by Seinfeld. Yet, there was an immediate welcomeness to his show that made me feel like Biggie walking into Amsterdam. I was Hip Hop royalty embracing a culture that openly embraced good weed, good sex, and social justice. Thus, Wale’s show felt like the fun you have with your boys and girls interspersed with the mindfulness you gain at knowing others don’t want you to have it.
Admittedly, I was SHOOKETH at the heightened cop presence at Brooklyn Steel; although that happens at every Hip Hop show. I was watching the cops watch Wale watch the crowd knowing that you couldn’t even find a girl scout at a Bon Iver concert with how little uniforms show up. Yet, after seeing his performance of “Sue Me,” Wale proved he is DANGEROUS! (lol!) He, literally, tipped over spitting his rhymes; serving a passion that could come from nothing less than his soul. Still, I KNEW Wale was going to give all of himself because his music a mix of light-heartedness and philosophy.
Wale – Love… (Her Fault) (feat. Bryson Tiller) [Official Music Video]
Wale is the man in your block who rocks three gold chains while genuinely speaking against materialism, and, you know what, you feel his sincerity and spirit. For Wale fans, he perfectly blends the heart and flash of Hip Hop; able to show that we would ALL want a mansion but we also want a conscious. I want to be a really good person driving a Lambo. BOOM! Thus, his crowd looked at him in awe as he rocked designer shades and consistently told us to get down with the beat but rise up against injustice. Naturally, I responded by twerking and swearing to vote in 2020. You may laugh but THIS is what makes Wale unique, and explains why his crowd was sold out. He is not just the “fun of Hip Hop” or even its rebelliousness; he is its intelligence, too.

Wale gave one of the MOST memorable, lit shows I have ever seen. That crowd was moved, educated, and even “Bronxified” by the presence of my older brother, unknown to him, The Kid Mero: as if this show could not be more for the culture. We laughed, we stood up, and, in the end, confirmed that we would 100% see a Wale show again. While for some artists once is enough, Wale is too original not to be repeated. Shout out to the woman that “Spiderman Twerked” next to me. You are a QUEEN! And if you do not know what that is, it is when someone climbs on a wall, like Spiderman, and twerks. Example: Rihanna.
