Concert Review: White Denim Are A Music Language At Brooklyn Bowl
You, often, hear the term, “Music is like a drug,” and that is not a facetious phrase. Music can strike your neurotransmitter receptors, and alter chemistry of your brain similar to an opioid. Of course, psych rock exemplifies how music is like a drug, but White Denim’s Brooklyn Bowl concert showed it is also a universal language.
White Denim are one the best band of musicians out there. They are so exceptionally talented that they remind you instruments are tools; with them you can build anything. “Backseat Driver,” “At The Farm,” and “Magazin” might as well have been sonic, constructions sites. You can hear the trucks backing up to pour cement on every melody, and make sure that it solidified into something you could walk on. Just on musicianship, White Denim are a worthy watch, but, like I said, it is their capacity to transfer emotions into sound that helps you remember, once again, music is spiritually linguistic. Every key and chord spoke to the crowd to tell each individual something about themselves.

From ”Double Death” to “Drug,” if White Denim’s music was any tool, it would be the pen or paintbrush; making images and thoughts concretely visible. In some ways, it explains why White Denim are not much “talkers.” When your music speaks so many volumes, you cannot interrupt its speech or whisperings of imagination amongst the audience’s ears. Thus, they play their songs like an antenna; simply receiving channels of sentimental stories. Moreover, as a listener/viewer, you want little interruption. You are begging their music to take over your, which is what a drug or language can: it blankets self-expression and makes what you carry, inside, feel tangible. Still, music is the safest drug and the most beautiful language, and, in concert, lead singer James Petralli feels like the only that can speak/sing it so fluently.

There is something nomadic to White Denim’s stage presence like, they are walking from their life’s journeys into a Performance( also the name of their last album). In between instrumental riffs and suites, Petralli’s voice is soulful: carrying the tall tales you need for your life’s journey like a mirage giving you water as you push through a desert path. Sure, their psychedelia may spark illusions and visions, but, just because it is in your mind, does not mean there is not a note of emotional truth. Hence, White Denim’s music/ concert is a universal language because it provides your a shared experience through how creatively interpret their expression.
