Concert Review: Victor Wooten Shows Music Is Empathy At Brooklyn Bowl

Victor Wooten’s Brooklyn Bowl show proved that to be artistic is to be empathetic. There is something inherently compassionate about the man who chooses to reflect upon human beings with music; using the dreaminess of sound to confront the realism of humanity. Wooten’s show, backed by trio members Dennis Chambers and Bob Franceschini and with originals from newest album Trypnotyx, reminded me of the NEED for the arts, which was a new experience for me.

While music always fulfills and concerts usually entertain, the necessity for both is not always apparent. Yet, now more than ever, they need to be, which explains why in-between tracks Wooten not only performed to his life but also to Life. For being a sweet, jovial man of stringed instruments, he also is a man of stories. In performance, he relies on sound like a spark; playing guitars like he is playing dynamites that he hopes boom people’s own sense of thoughts. To Wooten, the lyrics he does not put into his songs are saved to be spoken, and preached as warm sermons to push people to love more than ever. This element made the entire fluid in wealth and virtue, which is why I felt a passion for the arts. Yet, his eagerness for thoughtfulness through guitar soliloquies and wisdom  does not quiet his sense of fun. He looks at the band with an approving smile; as if they are marching forward in a spiritual plain that shows to be God is not just to be good but feel it.

The night was hours of jamming, which gave an ease to the night. There was no pretense and not too much showmanship beyond the fact that these were talented people showing their talent. It was a nice, peaceful night that made me recognize the worth of those sentiments. I admit “nice” and “peaceful” does not seem like where “the party” is, which is why we might hesitate to go there. Yet, Victor Wooten’s concert reveals that serenity can be as stimulating as ecstasy, especially if it includes Funk classic by Prince. Overall, Music HEALS, and Wooten believe that, which is why he has arranged a show that pours music like medicine on every stressful wound that just does not seem to cure on your daily.
