Concert Review: Yacht Sail Through Bowery Ballroom In Style
Yacht IS CRAZY, and I like it! I thought I knew exuberant, and the capacity to take a stage like you were Superwoman absorbing the sun. Then, I saw Claire L. Evans perform, and felt humbled to know that I know nothing.
YACHT – Shame (Official Video)
Evans takes the stage like a torpedo heading for an actual yacht. She adds fire to luxury lifestyles, but giving their visions of pristine coldness a warmer color. Moreover, she completely redefines how all “normal people” use a telephone (lol). From her forehead to the floor, that little red phone had lot of jealous people; wishing Evans could take them as close to her almost insane energy. You simply do not know what move she is going to do next, which keeps you joyfully on edge and in admiration as she keeps her voice so smooth. She simply does not miss a beat as she waltzes around the stage as like, the asylum version of a Ted Talk; both motivating and frenetic.
YACHT – The Afterlife
When you hear Yacht’s music, you expect a fun, vibrant show, but this was a cathartic, freeing experience. It was the concert equivalent of a safe space, except here we had the permission to air out our joys rather than our grievances. Sometimes, I wonder which is harder; saying when I feel bad or acknowledging that I feel good. The irony is that, although Yacht sings to “Shame”, “The Afterlife”, “Hard World”, and “Dystopia (The Earth Is On Fire)”, they feels so present and light. In no way, do their darker themes show in style or sound, which I love. Every track danced with rhythms that bopped and floated like Jona Bechtolt and Rob Kieswetter were mixing and making bubbles rather than music. If only we could approach life’s shadiness with a lighter touch, then we would have a brighter world.
YACHT – The Afterlife
My fave song of Yacht, that I also think is most poignant, is “I Thought The Future Would Be Cooler”. Even the title gets me because it is so true. We all have beliefs that, in time, everything would not only be better, but cooler; as if our future selves gain the secret of luxury that our present selves cannot seem to grasp. In some ways, that is why Yacht is so massively appealing, especially as performers. They use their concert to display what you may have missed in their sonic messages; life is not about being rich as much as being wealthy. It is about trading purses full of cash for moments full of joy because things and feelings are not, necessarily, tied. Hence, leave it to Yacht, to redefine how you sail through life.
