Diandra Interviews Ashley Kutcher: Songs To Nurse Your Spirit

If there is one person that knows what “care’ means, it is a nurse. Sure, a doctor gives you a diagnosis, does your surgery, and send you a prescription refill, but who holds your hand through all of that? Nurses give you the human healing you need as your doctor guides the physical one, and Ashley Kutcher fits this description. The nurse turned TikTok star sees her music like her line of work; meant to hold people through their dark times and give them hope for a full recovery. Thus, in our interview, we discuss compassion, and how her music came to be an emblem of it.

Diandra: Within music and nursing, there is a call for compassion. What is a moment of empathy you witnessed that you would dedicate a song to?

Ashley Kutcher: Within the nursing field, I saw all different types of situations. My newest release, “If I Could”, describes a lot of these difficult moments. I witnessed a lot of physical and mental health situations that I truly wished I could make better. “If I Could” is a song dedicated to those going through a difficult and painful situation.

Diandra: How do you see nursing similar to singing/songwriting?

Ashley Kutcher: Nursing and songwriting have always been so different to me, but with both careers I definitely feel like I am able to help others, just in different ways.

Diandra: You have said the worst pain is seeing others in pain. How would you define healing then, and what makes you feel others have healed?

Ashley Kutcher: I believe healing involves acceptance and trying to find the bright side even if it seems like there isn’t one. You just have to be there for the ones you love, even if you can’t actually change the situation.

Diandra: What is a random, college course you took that surprisingly influenced you as a songwriter? How so?

Ashley Kutcher: I took all mainly nursing classes. I don’t think there was a course that inspired a song, unless you count daydreaming while in a 3-hour lecture. Most of my writing would come to me when I was more relaxed at home. It’s funny, I actually do have some voice memos I recorded in the hospital singing little melodies that would randomly pop in my head.

Diandra: You write love songs according to both your own and others’ experiences. If you could turn a movie, tv show, or book love story into a song, which would it be and why?

Ashley Kutcher: There are so many movies out there that I feel like I could write about. I would probably choose a crime movie or podcast like Crime Junkie to write to. Almost like the Taylor Swift song, “No Body, No Crime”. I love that crime podcasts tell a story and add a dark twist.

Diandra: If “Love You From A Distance” could be a movie, which would it be and why?

Ashley Kutcher: The Notebook! There are so many concepts in the movie that describe this song. That one love that you feel like you could never let go, even if you couldn’t be together mentally or physically.

Diandra: What is your favorite childhood movie with music?

Ashley Kutcher: I grew up watching Mamma Mia all the time. I’m pretty sure I know every song.

Diandra: So many artists are using TikTok to promote their work. Do you feel there is a strategy to succeeding on TikTok/going viral or is it luck? If not the latter, what is your strategy?

Ashley Kutcher: This is so hard to say. I think different people have different niches and I don’t think anything is guaranteed with TikTok. My personal strategy is to try to follow trends, tell a story, and keep a video engaging.

Diandra: You want to bring hope through your music. What are the things that give you hope for yourself and humanity?

Ashley Kutcher: What gives me hope is knowing how my music has helped people. I feel like music helps people come together and that’s what makes me feel like it’s all worth it.

Diandra: Your new single is called “If I Could” – if you could do anything, what would you do?

Ashley Kutcher: My song, “If I Could”, is all about wanting to take the pain away from others. Currently, I have a situation where my friend is going through an extremely difficult loss. So right now, it’s best for me to just be there for her and surround her with the people and things she loves. If I could take away the pain from her, I would.
