Diandra Interviews Lawson Hull: Dreaming Is Easy, Life Is Hard

For Lawson Hull, like most people in 2020, the past year has been a realization of how we have delayed our dreams. Whether it was out of fear, laziness, trauma, or a lack of faith veiled under a guise of “patience,” the point is that 2019 was a lot “go” without any clue as to where we were going. We were moving, but 2020’s pause has made a lot of people realize they were not moving closer to their dreams, which means 2021 is all about shifts towards delayed goals. In Dreaming is Easy, Lawson Hull strums delicate, delirious melodies on what it means to have easy dreams but harsher paths. In our interview, we discuss what moved him to make a dream come true, even if its hard.

Diandra: What makes something dreamy to you? What makes something feel easy?

Lawson: Well, I mean, dreaming is easy. You don’t have to do anything. Coming up with dreams is easy, but deciding to lock onto the dream and try to make it happen is the hard part. At some point, you have to give yourself permission to want to do something because it can be kind of expensive or risky sometimes.

Diandra: What is a movie you think would become a great concept album? Why?

Lawson Hull – College Town (Official Music Video)

Lawson: Little Miss Sunshine. The story of a super dysfunctional family who road trips across the US to go to a kids beauty pageant. It’s full of road tripping and family drama, emotions, cars breaking down, people dying, but it’s kind of a comedy so the outlook is good.

Diandra: Describe a childhood moment where the power of music made you say, “Yup, that is what I am doing as an adult?”

Lawson: Honestly, I never really thought about doing this as a kid. I was definitely drawn to it as a passion when I started writing terrible songs as an early teen, and I’d come home from school and vent these songs standing out in a paddock so no-one could hear me. I think I played a song, at some school event once, that really gave me a rush at 14, and I knew I’d always want to write songs.

Diandra: What is a song or lyric inspired by just running through the mountain range and enjoying nature’s peace?

Lawson: It’s weird, but I never think about anything music related when I’m out running or hiking. Running and being in nature resets my brain so I can level out. That’s not to say I wouldn’t write a song about nature. Nothing nature related comes to mind in the EP, but I do like to write about mountains or the sea.

Diandra: With your love for outdoors, what is one place you would love to visit and what song does it feel like to you in appearance?

Lawson: Everyday I wake up and want to go to New Zealand’s South Island. I road-tripped there last year with a mate and was like “what the hell” about everything. It’s the best and I want to live there. There are way too many vibey cliche songs that would describe a place like this. An artist friend of mine, from New Zealand, who goes by Mountain Boy has an epic song called “52.”  It’ll all make sense when you listen (and go to NZ).

Diandra:  What aspects of your personality you feel reflects in this EP?

Lawson: There’s a bit of everything in there, but not in any obvious way. I’d say underneath there is a passiveness I have going on, which is not the greatest thing about me I’ll admit. People probably enjoy my chill nature, but when it gets down to making decisions, I often default to the easiest path or the one of least conflict. I get pretty lazy and lose drive sometimes because the confidence isn’t there. But that’s something I’ve been working on.

Diandra: What is your weirdest or most delightful dream and what does it symbolize to you ? Does it recur?

Lawson: Once I started lucid dreaming regularly, I freaking loved flying. No clue what it means.

Diandra: What is one thing you learned about yourself while falling in love? What did you learn about yourself during a break-up?

Lawson: After a good old fashioned breakup, if you have half a brain, you’ll learn to notice the signs of a terrible relationship. The warning signs are so bloody obvious but you get used to the bullshit and, like I said earlier, you’ll opt for the path of no conflict. I have learnt how easy it is for me to be manipulated. Regarding the falling in love part, I’ve learnt how hopelessly fast I fall in love.

Diandra: Your album cover is of you and your sister, as kids, eating ice cream. If you were an ice cream flavor which would you be versus which would your sister be? Why?

Lawson: I straight up eat plain vanilla because I like to see what kind of subtle variations you can get. Hopefully that says nothing about me (lol).

Because my sister is a bit of a weird health nut, she’d probably be green tea flavoured or turmeric or something nasty like that.

Diandra: If you could “Paint” happiness what does it look like to you?

Lawson: Happiness is playing live music, and I literally can’t wait to do that again.

Diandra: With 2021, feeling like a year to take from and build upon what was 2020, what is something you took from this year that you wish to build upon?

Lawson: This year has been about closing up the current EP chapter and continuing to solidify my sound and look. I’ve had the chance this year to figure out what I want to be, whilst the world was put on pause. I’ve also had the chance to write so many new songs that I’m so excited to share.
