Diandra Interviews Mint Field: Dealing With World Sentiments
Out September 25, Sentimiento Mundial brings the glory of psychedelia to your ears. Often, we approach this genre for its visuality, and its ability to make your heart feel like a kaleidoscope through sounds. Yet, the keyword is FEEL. There is an emotionality to psychedelia that sparks it imaginativeness, and Mint Field goes STRAIGHT for the feelings. Estrella Del Sol has used Mint Field as a way to approach world sentiments, and reminds herself that she is only a figment of this earth. In our interview, the fierce, Mexican songstress discusses being present and embracing the smallness of her universality.
Diandra: What do you feel are some “World Sentiments” right now?
Mint Field: Hope, indignation, denial, love, fear, anxiety, anger, disappointment, hopelessness, panic and preoccupations.
Diandra: How has the pandemic fueled your psychedelic sounds and visions of the world?
Mint Field: During the pandemic, I have spent more time than ever analyzing how our thoughts of the future can determine our own life. The pandemic has given me more sense of self-awareness of living in the present; that the only thing I have is this precise moment. Before this pandemic came into our lives I never used to think that way, and now I’m really grateful that this strange moment has given me that. This is reflected in our music, we have been writing and composing music more than ever. which feels amazing. Having the time to compose is also something that I’m really grateful for,as well.

Diandra: Supernatural is a word often used to describe your sound. Do you believe in the supernatural, and what is it that you believe about it?
Mint Field: I personally believe there’s a force above all of us, and there are things that we as humans can’t fully understand.
Diandra: Another word used to describe your music is dreamy. What are some of your dreams you have placed in your music: from sound to lyric?
Mint Field: I’m more of a daydreamer, I feel lyrically most of my lyrics are inspired by my daily life. I’m a compulsive observer of life from outside and inside. I think my dreams come from that thought and from what that makes me feel.
5) Diandra: Music is often a reflection of a person, which song off the record do you feel most embodies your personality and what 3 traits does it share?
Mint Field: Mmm… it could be ‘Delicadeza’. This song is very contemplative, delicate, and subtle. I feel that same way.
Diandra: A recurring theme in your songs is escapism. If there was a person, place, and time you can escape to: who, where, and to when would it be? Why?
Mint Field: I would like to escape to the mid-’60s, where I could have a huge garden with where to grow my own food, 1 dog, and two cats. Someplace where I could go and have huge walks by a river nearby: where the sun would hit all day, and I could go outside and the sun would touch my skin.
Diandra: You chose a more minimal sound for this record. Do you feel it is befitting in its match of the world’s current state?
Mint Field: Definitely. I think it befits conceptually and even sonically. But honestly, that wasn’t something planned; it was born in the moment of composing and recording.

Diandra: Your album has a nostalgic vibe to it. What is your favorite childhood memory with music?
Mint Field: I’m very nostalgic, and I remember being the same way as a child. My first proximity to music was because of the music that my dad used to play at our home. He introduced me to psychedelic music, playing me Pink Floyd records, which has been very meaningful throughout my whole life.
Diandra: In your music approaching the highs and lows of daily life, what do you feel is a high and low to your daily life?
Mint Field: My thoughts can go very deep into some things I shouldn’t be thinking of: a lot of irrational thoughts could be the lows of my life. I honestly enjoy the simple things in life like the sun on my skin, breakfast, listening to music, going to the park, and have a good walk. Those are the highs of my life right now.
Diandra: What has music most taught you to appreciate about yourself?
Mint Field: Making music has taught me to be in deeper contact with my emotions. I have learned a certain way to identify myself and how to identify how I feel after certain actions; as well as realizing that being very emotional and sentimental can be a good quality.
Diandra: Moving from Tijuana to Mexico City, how do you see that move pushed your sound and your lyrics to grow in theme?
Mint Field: It has definitely influenced my way of writing music. Growing up in Tijuana near the beach, much of Mint Field’s music has always been inspired by the surroundings, and living in Mexico City hasn’t changed that. Here the rhythm is so different, everything goes fast, every time there’s things happening. I think our music is now reflecting that.
Diandra: Nature seems to be an inspirer in terms of your music and your message of people needing to stay grounded and connect with their surroundings. What do you feel is blocking people from connecting with nature and others, and how do you see your music as a bridge to reconnection?
Mint Field: Yes, nature to me is everything. For me, it’s about recognizing yourself as another living being on the planet. Humans, can be really egocentric; we believe we’re invincible, we want to eat the world all the time, and we sometimes forget our roots. We’re just human beings co-existing with other species. Our world is going through a crazy moment where living is more virtual than face to face. That honestly scares me and makes me think we may be losing our human nature of coexistence. I like the personal reinterpretation of our music. If that can become a bridge to reconnect people with nature than that would be beautiful.

Diandra: With that in mind, what are the things you do to reconnect with your surroundings, and what is one lesson you have learned about humanity by doing so?
Mint Field: I think that the fact that once I realized I was just one of the so many people in the world has made me feel more in harmony with my surroundings. Sometimes, life can look too hard, I feel all of us go through that but I think there’s always a balance in life and we’re always in control of that, even when we think that’s not true. It really is. I think self-love is one of the most important things in life, that can change the perspective of life and what surrounds us.
