Diandra Interviews Devin Kirtz: Being Your Own Best Friend
Devin Kirtz is changing his life, and he is doing it for self-love purposes. Always wanting to enter the music realm, Kirtz spent years as a pro soccer player for the NY Red Bulls, but his passion for R&B crooning was brewing. Signed by “Diddy” and even singing with his son Quincy, Kirtz quickly got big names on his side, and, in our interview, we discuss how being your own “best friend” really does attract better friends.
Diandra: What is the best moment you have ever had with a best friend?
Devin: Without a doubt, my best moment was being on tour! I love traveling, in general, so getting to travel the world while performing and partying with my best friends has been my absolute favorite thing!

Diandra: What are the qualities your best friends all have in common that you most appreciate?
Devin: Spontaneity! I love that my best friends are all down for an adventure at any moment.
Diandra: “Best Friends,” in essence, is a song about becoming your own best friend. What have the years shown you about loving yourself, and when did you feel you actually started to?
Devin: Not to be vain, but I’ve always loved myself! LOL. My parents were amazing with teaching my siblings and I about self-love at a very young age.
Diandra: What are the qualities you most love about yourself?
Devin: I love that I am spontaneous and (over) optimistic.
Diandra: If you could describe making a song like one would making a soccer play, how would you do it?
Devin: Both happen in the moment. You take your situation and surroundings and do whatever you can to make it something beautiful!
Diandra: Describe the moment when you knew or felt like it was “the time” to do music full-time.
Devin: I was on the road traveling with the Red Bull Wingers. I remember writing music in my hotel room, and realizing I was putting 50 percent into both passions, and I needed to choose one. Music won.

Diandra: Going from a pro-soccer player to an artist, what are the similar dynamics that both worlds/ industries share?
Devin: Both are dog eat dog and very political. The highs are high, and the lows are low. You just gotta roll with it and just keep swimming.
Diandra: From Lauryn Hill to Sam Cooke, you have found inspiration from soulful singers. What about how they sang, especially to life, most inspired you?
Devin: Aside from their insane talent and sound, I love how they relate everything to the real world. You can just feel it!
Diandra: Both artists mentioned sang to the highs and lows of love. What has music taught you about love?
Devin: I’m not sure if it’s what music has taught me about love, as much as it’s what love taught me about music. Love inspires the music.
Diandra: What do you hope “Best Friends” displays about your artistry in comparison to first single, “Move”?
Devin: I hope “Best Friends” shows the world that I am here for the love of the art. Whether it’s being serious or giving you something to show that you don’t need to take yourself so seriously sometimes.
Diandra: What is your favorite childhood memory with music?
Devin: My parents, thankfully, made sure that I grew up listening to oldies, and my favorite memories for sure were performing Motown songs at home for my family.
