Diandra Interviews Enjambre: Change Is Necessary
Filled with good vibes, Enjambre understand the music industry. Nearing 2 decades together, they are a brotherhood that never ages. They are all smiles with refreshing takes on life and how to live it the way you want. For me that is the key to happiness, and, in our interview, the joy was felt.
Diandra: What comes more naturally to you: the melody or lyrics?
Luis: It depends. For Relámpago, it started off with the bass, and we were just playing and it was off. And we kept on playing and it sounded to us like lightening, and then the lyrics came. We don’t know why, but it sounded like lightening to us. The reviews were mostly positive, but the negative ones complained like, “Whatever happened to deeper lyrics?” I was just thinking like, “This song is not about profound lyrics. This song is more about the riff and the sound.” The lyrics were meant to accentuate the mood of the song. So fans of our lyrics were not satisfied, and nor were the ones that love our melodies. The new record will have more songs, and we are working in interesting things. This song was an ambassador for us to show how different we can be.
Diandra: How do you deal with public opinion or press?
Javi: It could be hard if you are someone that takes the press and others opinion really seriously. Like Luis said, we were trying to do something different. It was about us and our desire to explore and not do what we do often. I guess that it is what it is all about. Taking risks. What would be the point of eating and recycling the same things? We need to keep surprising ourselves and do new things. If we are happy with that then there is bound to be a good answer.
Diandra: But isn’t it impossible to not take it personal or, at least, into account?
Luis: Yeah! It could be. Yet, it is about finding out what satisfies you as a band. Also, our fans our growing so we are going to get more opinions. It is important but it is not relevant. But we love the good ones, THANK YOU! (They all laugh).
Diandra: Do you feel that music, in some way, is intuitive. It guides you to guide fans to you?
Luis: Music is something that is in my soul. Ever since I was young, it allowed me to purge all my feelings from within me. I knew I needed a band because I was a little, rocker kid. Then, it just turned into this. I guess the driving force behind it all is getting ideas and feelings out there in musical way.
Diandra: So have you had moments where you have discovered new things about yourself through an album?
Luis: You know I like that word album because it reminds me of how my mom had all these hot albums of me grown up. So it is like going back through different states in our life. The way I use to write and the way we used to play. When I am driving, I like to listen to the old albums, and it takes me back. It is our life registered in a musical way. In interviews, when they ask us, “What is our music about?” I say, “It our life. Our daily life glorified in musical way.”
Julian: It is retrospect. It surprises you to see how you were and what you have gone through: the experiences we had on the road and what we were listening to.
Diandra: How have you seen each other grow?
Julian: I know we look young, but we have been through a lot. (They laugh!) We have been playing since we were 15 and for different bands. Enjambre, at one point, was another lineup. The five of us are serious musicians, and we have many musical tastes. Our sensibilities are similar, and, when we are practicing, and someone suggests a new idea we listen and respect it. Even if takes hours for a 2-second riff, we do it.
Luis: We count on each other. We have been with each other for so long, we saw each other build families and have kids. God, I hate those kids. (They laugh!) JUST KIDDING! We are brothers. When I want to see a movie we call each other up. We just saw Toy Story 4 together.
Diandra: Where do you feel you are as artists today?
Javi: I think we are in a comfortable place. We are all in a good place. Although, it is also not so good to be comfortable. So it is about striving and leaving a stamp on this life. It is about reinventing ourselves and being proud of ourselves.
