Diandra Interviews Frida Sundemo: Accept Your Life Then Create It
It is hard to be happy because you either A) can’t let go of what you never had or B) cannot accept what you have had. UGH! Life is so complex. Yet, Frida Sundemo is KNOWN for making pop music that feels almost hymnal in how it uplifts listeners. In our interview, she discusses how she stays motivated creatively, despite the natural highs and lows life and career.
Diandra: With everything from places to nature inspiring your writing, do you find that your surroundings inspire you to look to your heart for creativity or your heart pushes you to look at your surroundings for inspiration?
Frida: Hm, good question! I’d say it probably goes both ways. I’m, for the most part, open to receive inspiration or strong feelings and it can come from anywhere really. I always try and treat those ideas carefully and amplify them within myself. But of course. sometimes, I’m not in the right mood.

Diandra: What is one song you have written inspired by a specific moment in a specific place. What was the story behind the song and its inspiration?
Frida: ”It’s OK” was written in LA right after a phone call with a dear friend of mine who was going through hard times. I remember feeling very bad and useless: not being able to help her feel better. I guess the message, in the song, wasn’t only to my friend, but also to myself, as the person, on the side watching.
Diandra: “Gazelles” sings to the beauty and fear of the unknown. Describe a time when you feared the unknown and, in the end, found beauty in it.
Frida: That’s one of my favourite things to do; trying to catch that feeling of the unknown. With that said, I love just being at home and playing it safe too. But one example when I actually did challenge myself is when I was asked to play a role in the British movie ”Kill Your Friends”. A week earlier I had told a friend that ”one thing I could never do is acting”. But there I was and I couldn’t do anything but say yes to it. And I sure found a lot of beauty in that adventure.
Diandra: Your music has been described as jovial and uplifting. What are the things you do to stay happy and hopeful with life?
Frida: I make sure to cry whenever I need to, and then it’s easier to feel happiness again. I also try to be thankful for all the beautiful people and opportunities I’ve got in my life. It might sound pretentious, but I believe in finding, at least one thing, to be thankful for before you fall asleep in the evening. And when I’m the most sad or feeling hopeless, I have some happy thoughts that help me feel lighter, at least, a little.

Diandra: Is there an artist or song, in particular, that make you feel happy and motivated? Why?
Frida: Haha, this is gonna be a very simplistic answer but ”Up & Up” by Coldplay is actually super efficient to me. I used it just a few days ago when I was on my way to school, very early in the morning, and I was feeling low. I was miming the lyrics as I was moving with the masses of people and started to feel this happy feeling growing in me.
Diandra: “Nothing Can Hurt Me” has you singing to the perfect freedom. How would you define your “perfect freedom” and the highs and lows of attaining it?
Frida: I think the only time you can experience a ”perfect freedom” is when you’re a very young child, naive, and without any real bad experiences. Then you’re gonna try and find that feeling again for the rest of your life, without being able to. It’s a little sad, right? I guess the adult version of ”perfect freedom” must be accepting your life no matter if you’re going through highs or lows.

Diandra: Singing so much to healing yourself, what are the things you have most learned to love about yourself, especially in terms of flaws?
Frida: I’m learning everyday how to love myself even when failing. It’s so logical, yet so hard to feel when you’re at the bottom, but I’m getting there. A more concrete example is that I hated my out-sticking ears growing up, but, today, they’re my favourite body parts, haha.
Diandra: You have used films to inspire your music, as well. What recent movies are inspiring your upcoming record and how so?
Frida: I absolutely loved ’Kapernaum’. So beautiful, visually, and it is, as well, a very inspiring story about never giving up.
Diandra: What is you favorite childhood memory with music?
Frida: I was about eight years old when I was playing simple classical pieces on the piano and discovered that if I added the key-note to all the notes in the melody, so that I played to notes with right hand at the same time, it all sounded so much more beautiful! I can still remember that amazing feeling.
Diandra: What are three things you have learned about yourself, as person, through your creative process?
Frida: That I have a lot of things to learn from other people. That even when I feel like I will never ever be able to come up with another song again, I will! And I have improved my skills to collaborate with other people.

Diandra: You see music as personal history; a documentation of how hope has grown within you over the years. What is your advice for anyone trying to grow in hope as a person and creative?
Frida: Never give up. Try and see the beauty of struggling; that’s really crucial for coping with creative processes that lasts for many years. And even though it’s very, very difficult; try not to compare yourself with other people.
