Diandra Interviews From: Trying To Make Autumn A Sound

Being an artist is a stunning but weird adventure. The way your mind works is beautifully insane like, for instance, FROM: a current classical music student with a knack for guitars and poetic philosophies that used his newest EP, otoño, as an attempt to make Autumn a sound. He wanted to literally take the season of Fall, and turn it into a total, music vibe. In our interview, we discuss how Fall is a gorgeous down from Summer, which makes it, emotionally, the perfect space for an artist to get inspired.

Diandra: Why Fall?

From:  Two Falls ago, I had a very sad time, and I was trying to show that. It was, of course, because of a girl. I liked her and we couldn’t be together, and it was a hard time, for me, because I had to let her go. Yet, it started this time for me where I wrote songs, traveled Spain, and started exploring different genres. I really started to listen to music that reminded of that Fall season and made me feel one with myself.

Diandra: Any artist that felt like Fall to you?

From: King Krule!

Diandra: You feel like you would fit into that scene?

From: In another country? Maybe, if I was born there, but, in Spain, that type of genre never became anything. So I really have to adapt because I am here, and my label is from Spain. I am always trying to listening to new stuff and get new influences. I listen to my first songs and I don’t like them. I am trying to improve and make a new sound that fits my style but also is for the public coming out to the scene.

Diandra: So you have already outgrown your first songs?

From: Yeah, unfortunately! When I was 17, I made my first record in English, and I really don’t like them at all. Then, I made my first songs in Spanish, and I really didn’t like the vibe. With this “No” , you get this vibe of desperation and rawness that I really like. I am in love with it and I am really proud because I think it is the best song I have written so far.

Diandra: Was there a formula to that song or the EP to give is that “Fall” feel?

FROM: I wrote it last year and I was looking for a sound that reminded me of looking out the window. I started with the baseline and I would add more things like, melodies that reminded me of Fall leaves hitting the ground. I was seeing so many leaves fall to the ground. Then, I finished it, the song kind of disappeared because I liked some other songs I had done at the time. Then, I went to meet with my label, and I heard it again, and I really liked it.

Diandra: With all these sad, love songs, have you learned something about how you love?

From: I have a very strong attachment to people so when a bond disappears or when I break-up with someone, I feel so sad. I get very tired and hopeless, and I get very anxious. I have learned that I cannot make such hard attachments to people because it is not good for me.

Diandra: That was surprisingly candid!

From: I don’t attach to the right people, but when I have a bond with someone it is so strong and that is the problem. Of course, now I am more mature, and when I look back at like, my first girlfriend, I think I would change how I behaved.

Diandra: I see you are rocking Beatles posters… who is your fave?

From: It is a cliche but John Lennon. He was my first, major musical figure, and now I am listening to an album he did: Plastic Ono Band. It is such a deep album, and I really like it. He was a rude person, but then again nobody is perfect. George Harrison is cool too.

Diandra: What does your music capture about you?

From: I am very extroverted person with people. I can talk really loud, but, privately, I am very introverted. I am not so active. Like now, I am just watching The Office. I love Jim, Dwight, and Andrew. It is the thing that keeps me alive when I come back from college. Just laugh. I feel like my music wraps up what it is to be uncomfortable with yourself. Most of my songs are about things I have done, and when I write them, I feel less self-conscious.
