Diandra Interviews Harloe: Relationships Are Like Rivers

Harloe is ready to make her OWN imprint in the music world. Having written hits for the likes of Celine Dion, Charli XCX, Zayn, Britney Spears, Jojo, and Sabrina Claudio (DAMN!), the Roc Nation signee is ready to make music for herself. In her EP, Rivers Run Dry, she strolls through a rich soundscape to observe a relationship that changed value: going from one of love to one that taught her self-love its end. In our interview, we discuss HEARTBREAK, Alicia Keys, and how decides when a song is for her versus another artist.
HARLOE – We’re All Gonna Lose

Diandra: With your music being about love and heartbreak. What is one lesson a heartbreak taught you and another love taught you?

HARLOE: The biggest lesson was to try and enjoy every moment for what it has to offer. Sometimes, we don’t know the reason behind what it happening to us, but just trust that you will get something out of it. It is never a waste. Just love yourself!

Diandra: How would you define yourself in love? Both in giving and receiving?

Harloe: I would say I am open to both. I think I have become a lot more in touch with that side of myself so I would define myself as receptive.

Diandra: With your songs being about the power-plays and holds partners can have on each other in relationships. Describe a relationship that taught you your power?

Harloe: My last relationship taught me a lot about power. There were things about it that were so beautiful, and there were things that made feel like I was surrendering a lot of myself but not in a good way. So that was a relationship that was really informative to me about staying true to yourself. It taught me about being loving and loving yourself through that.

Diandra: Singing to romance and disillusionment, what are some thing music taught you about always keeping romance alive? What songs taught you this?

Harloe: Alicia Keys’ Woman’s Worth really taught me about what I deserve, and what every woman deserves. Music has really taught me that, in a split second, you can get in touch with someone without saying anything. You can both hear the same song, and feel those really beautiful feelings together; whatever it is describing like, passion and nostalgia. That feeling can be in just the sounds and words.

Diandra: Having written for other artists, how do you decipher between songs that you feel are for you and ones for others?

Harloe: That is a really good question! I, usually, decide in the moment, and, if I don’t know
right away, time will tell. Either an artist will feel really passionate about having it themselves or I will feel the urge to release it.

Diandra: How would you interpret the meaning “Rivers Run Dry” in terms of how it embodies life and love?

Harloe: For me, the song really was, even though something is ever-flowing, it will just go and come back again. Sometimes, it is not meant in the season for you, or it is not meant to continue. The river of love in a relationship can run dry, too, and its about seeing whether it should be let go or worked one.
HARLOE – One More Chance

Diandra: You spoke about how much you grew while making this EP? How did you see your growth as a person and which songs would you choose to symbolize that on the EP?

Harloe: The first song I wrote on the EP was “Rivers Run Dry” and the last song was “Crush On You.” You can really see those as a juxtaposition of my growth. One is really struggling to let go of something but accepting it, and “Crush On You” is already on that acceptance phase. Those are the two that really symbolize them.

Diandra: In honor of Crush, how you describe your first crush and what do you remember most liking or dreaming about them?

Harloe: My first crush was in middle school, and I was always doing plays and he really smelled good. I just remember being like, “MMmmmmM, I like that cologne.” That was a very sweet like, I never really smelled something like that before.

Diandra: In honor of Cut Me Loose, what is a situation that taught your about the power of self- freedom and expression?

Harloe: Putting our music really taught me about that power because putting out my own music is something that I really overthink. Just letting that go was really empowering for me, and creating this body of work. This EP was really insightful for all around.

Diandra: If you could describe this EP according to your personality, what are the traits you give it?

Harloe: I would give it mostalgic, melodic, and soulful.
HARLOE – Crush On You

Diandra: Describe the first moment you fell in love with music. What was the song and why?

Harloe: I always loved music, but I think, when I was really really little. I just loved so many Disney movies, and I remember hearing “A Part of Your World” and thinking “Yeah I Love that.” And when I was older: Michale Jackson. Watching him perform songs like, “Thriller” and “Billie Jean”
