Diandra Interviews Leah Kate: Taking You The The 2090’s With A “Bad Idea”

I LIKE Leah Kate’s sound, and her newest track, “Bad Idea,” is a total bop. It lyrically scintillates with the idea of embracing the “bad boy” or rather the “bad idea,” while giving you a coolly bombastic beat that BEGS for the replay button. Her sound feels like the 90’s has met the 2020’s. Thus, she is taking you to the 2090’s; bringing you to the retro- electro pop that defined the era as deliciously groovy, passionate, and brimming with a hopeful future. Bach then, we imagined 2020, would be so great. Welp, that was the wrong idea, and, in our interview, Leah Kate discusses the wrong ideas she had about love and friendship but her hope to discover the right ones.

Diandra: Describe your first crush, and what you loved about them?

Leah Kate: I remember him vividly. I was in kindergarte,n and he was just the cutest. Every girl loved him!  I mean, I was 5, so I don’t remember what specific qualities I did like about him, but I was so scared to talk to him. I was so shy growing up, and he would always ask me to scream my name because everyone thought I was a mute!

Diandra: What about love have you always wanted or feel you still haven’t experienced?

Leah Kate: I don’t think I’ve ever been with someone who I’m like “Wow, I want to be with this person for the rest of my life.” I’m really good at finding reasons not to be with someone, but it’s something I’m working on.

Me: I felt that.

Diandra: What has been the most romantic thing anyone has done for you?

Leah Kate: Someone sent me cute handwritten letters and desserts in quarantine. That was pretty cute.

Diandra: How has the pandemic changed your relationship with social media and music?

Leah Kate: Unfortunately, it’s got me using social media more. Just as of yesterday, I put a time limit on it for an hour a day to manage it a bit. On the flip side, it’s been inspiring seeing what people are doing and how others are getting creative in music; just sharing the love and support on social media.

How does “Bad Idea” embody where you feel you are going in style, sound, and message for your upcoming content?

More bad ass, funky, danceable, with a slight 80s dark vibe!

Diandra: What is your favorite lyric you have ever written?

Leah Kate: ”When you let them in they let you down” – STAY TUNED FOR THIS ONE!

Me: I felt that.

Diandra: In BFF, you sang about how your friends aren’t really your friends. What have your best friends taught you about what you need from friendship?

Leah Kate: Loyalty and honesty. I’ve learned some friends can be your worst enemies, sometimes, and it’s rare that good ones come along. “BFF” was a song about a very toxic friend I had who really brought me down with her.

Diandra: With your IDGAF attitude, what is your advice for those seeking to be confident?

Leah Kate: Own what you do. Be strong. Don’t let others try to bring you down because they probably will. People are shady. Go crush it and don’t care what others think!

Diandra: Writing about friendships as much as love relationships, which break-up do you feel is worse? A friendship one or with a lover? Why?

Leah Kate: They are both so awful, in different ways, and I’ve most definitely experienced them both. I would say a friendship breakup causes me more anxiety while a love breakup makes me feel more sad and sick.

Diandra: Working with so many collaborators, how has that inspired how you write your songs?

Leah Kate: I love to collaborate and have someone to bounce ideas off of. I’m always inspired by my life events for songwriting topics, but it’s great having someone to help bring my idea to life.

Diandra: What is your favorite childhood memory with music?

Leah Kate: My favorite memory is going to visit my aunt in Nashville, every summer, just to go to this karaoke booth as an 8 year old and record CDs of me singing my favorite karaoke songs. It was the most heartwarming thing for me to do, as a child, and was truly the only reason I went to visit her (sorry Aunt Cindy if you are reading this).
