Diandra Interviews Mr.Tropical: Facing Death With Music
In perspective, everyone would want to be José Raúl González. He has fantastic music that has taken him around the world. He has an upcoming cartoon series, and, after meeting him, a noble heart. Yet, he was also diagnosed with terminal cancer, and told, about a year ago, he had only a few months to live. Now, I am not going to go all “Marianne Williamson” on you, and tell you that positivity cures you. Yet, I do believe it changes you. There are certain moments in life where your soul can feel like its either sink or swim. In our interview, he discusses his choice to “swim,” and how it led to a literal cartoon called Mr. Tropical.
Diandra: How do you see music like a spiritual act?
Mr. Tropical: Totally! 100% From the minute you create, it is like a purge from the soul. From then on, it is a spiritual act. For me the expression of art is the fuller realization of being, and, to me, the greatest service you can have for humanity is to fully realize yourself. Realize your power and potential to give to others. If more people realized that, I think we would get to a better world.

Diandra: Do you feel music has helped you achieve harmony with your soul?
Mr. Tropical: Music has helped me to capture a lot of things happening within me: a lot of emotions, which has given me harmony. Yet, Life has taught me more about harmony, while my music is to express what I have learned. In the process of creating, when you are genuine about you are expressing, the same process leads you to enlightenment.
Diandra: Has your music led you down surprising roads?
Mr.Tropical: In my case, they diagnosed me with cancer, and told me I had four months to live. This project pushed me like, I needed to do this. It was as if my mind and my heart, although they told me I was dying, said, “No! You are not dying because you have to do this!” It is so important to me. It pushed me to go through what I have gone through!
Diandra: So would you say that intuition has always guided you or just in this album, in particular?
Mr. Tropical: Always! Always! More than anything, even when I try to work with my rationale, I crash into a wall of intuition. This project is special because I tried to put together everything I have experienced in my life in the form of an animated character. I even wrote a book. I was going to release the album next year, but, when I got cancer, everything paused. Then, I decided I have to launch this character, and I have to do it. I have to send his message, which is that every human being has a superpower. Our journey on earth, is to find our power: to fully realize ourselves.
Diandra: So what make you most excited about becoming Mr. Tropical?
Mr. Tropical: The excitement of waiting what is going to come next. It is such a different facet for me. Mr. Tropical has made me grab a character like an actor. To be fearless and vulnerable, and opening myself up without care to what others say. In exploring and seeing myself in this character, it makes you feel vulnerable. Mr. Tropical has been a blessing. As an artist, when someone tells you that you are going to die, it brings up our biggest fear: death. We are creators. So, pushing me towards death, I felt closer to life. I feel more present. In facing death, I have lived more.
I just have to say this! He is a really good human being. Sometimes, I cannot hide when I really like a heart. I think facing death does not, necessarily, make you clutch to life or even wisdom. Think about it! How many times have you felt something bad happen to you, and you only sunk more? Thus, you have to admire José Raúl González’s rise in creativity and thus heart. He is so calm, wise, and sweet, which is why YOU HAVE TO CHECK OUT MR.TROPICAL! For More Information On Mr. Tropical Click Here.
