Diandra Interviews Philmon Lee: Nobody Saves You But Yourself
Philmon Lee is known for his raspy voice and how its makes his song feel like you could touch them. You can pick up the gravel from the roads he takes to reunite with lovers or smell the green grass of nostalgia that winds through his instrumentals as he, like most of us, recalls better days. In his newest single, with Lindsey Sterling, “No Saving Me,” he sings to brokenness and confronting whether you ever stop being “broken.” Maybe, healing is learning to carry the pieces, and, in our interview, he discusses how music made him do just that.
Diandra: What is your favorite gospel song that you feel most captures the energy of your music?
Philmon: I would say Amazing Grace. It is such an emotional song, and I think that is why I strive to make emotional records now.

Diandra; What is your favorite childhood memory with music and family?
Philmon: It would definitely have to be touring with my dad at 4 and 5 years old, and as I grew up, watching him performing live on stage.
Diandra: You call your songs a cultural gumbo. What are the “flavors/” influences people would be surprised to find in there, and what is the spiciest kick, you feel, to your sound that makes it a unique taste?
Philmon: Some rock and roll, soul, pop, a little r&b. Some Elvis in there, Post Malone, Steven Tyler, Lewis Capaldi, Sam Smith. Definitely think the somewhat raspy voice.
Diandra: You want to be remembered, but what do you want people to remember about you as a person and artist?
Philmon: I want to be remembered for being a great musician, and being one of the best live performers that lived. My album coming up will have such a mixture of vibes and tastes.

Diandra: Sunflower is a song about resilience and not letting dark times take your “shine.” Who or what are the sunflowers in your life that help you get through the worst times?
Philmon: Sunflower itself is about how strong and resilient I was. Now to others, they can take it as they have certain sunflowers in their life. But for me I was talking about myself, and how I didn’t let people bring me down.
Diandra: What is the kindest thing anyone has done for you that moves music within you?
Philmon: When that special someone told me how much I meant to them, and how special I was. And it really got my emotions going and inspired me to write something powerful.
Diandra: Cite 3 different moments from childhood to now, when you felt you KNEW music was your destiny.
Philmon: The first would be singing at an elementary school banquet and everyone loved it. The second would be singing on stage at my dad’s concert. The last would have to be my senior year chorus concert.

Diandra: What are four, random facts about you as a person that you say, “If you don’t know this, you don’t know Philmon?”
Philmon: I love to fish. I used to have one of the biggest fears of singing in front of people. I’m a huge Auburn fan. I absolutely love hot wings and Italian food.
Diandra: Memories is about electrifying moments. If you could go back in time to any moment or anywhere in the world, where would you go to be electrified.
Philmon: If I could go back in time for one amazing moment I wish I would’ve been there at Live Aid when Queen performed.
Diandra: What was your favorite, childhood toy and, in looking back, how do you see your friendship with it oddly inspires music?
Philmon: Definitely had to be my mini drum kit I had growing up as a kid. I believe that helped me form my rhythm.
Diandra: What is the best love advice you would put into a song for your past self?
Philmon: Don’t be scared to express feelings when making music. Once you cut loose, you will possibly make one of the best songs ever.
Diandra: What is your favorite comedy or drama? Any good Netflix recommendations?
Philmon: I don’t watch a lot of TV, but I can say I’m a huge Stranger Things fan.
