Diandra Interviews Rauw Alejandro: Staying Solid As Your Career Rises

Good People Matter! Especially, when you are entering an industry that could, honestly, not care if you are good to your mom, your people, or even yourself. The entertainment world is a business and it is a constant clash between the one thing that feeds humanity, the arts, and the one thing that keeps us hungry, money. Thus, I was elated to interview Rauw Alejandro and find that this GUARANTEED Reggaeton superstar has a great heart, a solid head on his shoulders, and as smooth a speaking voice as he does a singing one.

Diandra: How do you feel Reggaeton has modernized to become a universal music?

Rauw: I think that around 4 years ago, right around Despacito, it became number one in the most consumed music genres in the world. That is thanks to all the pioneers, from Puerto Rico to Panama. You have Daddy Yankee, Wisin Y Yandel, Ozuna. These people worked to level us up and make sure our genre leaves its mark.

Diandra: So how do you see yourself as a power-play in this genre?

Rauw: I think my music offers a lot to this world and Reggaeton. I think my offering is different from what it in the current market. I think my style and melodies and form of dance is different and I know my name will be in lights. I know that in the history book of Reggaeton my name will be written.

Diandra: YES, IT WILL! I genuinely think so.

Rauw: (laughing) I got a lot of dreams. These past few months, the growth of my career has been immense, Thank God!, especially after “Fantasia.” It was a great hit, and it keeps growing and is, currently, on the billboard charts. It was something I did not expect and I am so grateful for it. Every moment in my career has been a process and journey with a purpose, and I have had fun all the way.

Diandra: Well, I am not surprised that “Fantasia” is such a growing hit for you because it has this very romantic, R&B element to it.

Rauw: Yeah, I began singing R&B and that was my strength, and then I combined it and went into Dancehall and then Reggaeton. Every time I work, I work with a bass and no percussions, which is common when making an R&B song, and then, later, I add all the percussions and the “Dancehall” and “Reggaeton.”

Diandra: What do you feel, being an R&B fan, this genre of love has taught you about relationships?

Rauw: So much! So much! R&B puts you in such a good mood. It relaxes you enough to feel romantic, and I have always been the type of person to fall in love quickly and easily. So when I watched R&B performers, I loved how they added showmanship to romance. It clicked with me and gave me a connection to music.

Diandra: What it teach you about seducing a woman?

Rauw: Of course! A lot! I would hear a song and jot down notes like to see if this would work to make her love me. You know, maybe, I should dedicate this song to this woman to see if she falls in love with me, as well. All my relationship experiences have served as inspiration for my songs. I think that is why a lot of people have identified with my songs and tell me how certain ones match what they are experiencing when it comes to love. It helps them to o through whatever it is, positive or negative, in their life,

Diandra: Do you think you have fallen in love?

Rauw: Yeah! (he laughs) I have fallen in love and I have written songs about it too, but I won’t say, which ones. They are rolling around somewhere. (he laughs)

Diandra: Entering a new, less romantic subject! You studied Finance, and I was curious how your studies have helped you protect yourself as an artist?

Rauw: Very much! To be honest, I was never good in school, but, in math, I was really good. So when I entered college, I knew I wanted to study arts. I knew I was going be an artist and enter the music world but, I thought, no matter what, I will need to know finances. I knew I wanted to run my own business and be my own leader. So I studied Finances for that purpose. I really love Math, and I thought it would be an added asset to building my music career, as well. I am still a few courses shy from graduation, but it helps you to know what is happening with your money and how to keep tabs how others are running your business.

Diandra: You were also ready to be a soccer player, and you have discussed the sadness of losing that career path. In perspective, do you feel like music was your destiny?

Rauw: Definitely! I think that it was written. I think God had his plans for me, and I have never been the type of person to force situations. I have always been a “go with a flow” kind of guy. So a few things happen that told me, in my gut, “this is not the path for you,” and I had dedicated my life to becoming a soccer player. Luckily, I had the strength to let go of that dream and experiment and find another dream. I always loved music. Soccer and music were like hand in hand for me. The loss of that dream made me strong and mature more.

Diandra: As you gain these triumphs in music, do you ever feel nervous about fame?

Rauw: Fame…. I never have really focused on it. By the time, I started in music I was 21, and I had already enjoyed so much of my youth. I had partied a lot. I had fun. I had already lived through so much so now I know to value, always, what I get. I had my feet to the ground and was raised with great values; thanks to my amazing mom. So fame, psychologically, it is not something that I really do not think about. At times, I will admit it can be tiring, but I have such a great team and you have to enjoy every day for what it is.

Diandra: Your mom must be going crazy with your rise to fame?

Rauw: Oh My God, she is my publicist! (He laughs) She is all over facebook posting everything do and all of my songs, and calling her friends to say I am going to be on the news or a tv show. I am always communicating with her and she calls herself my secretary. She is my publicist, my manager, my lawyer, my everything! She is very happy. At first, you know, like every mom, she was not so happy and a little scared, but she is always supportive and has always supported me in everything I do. She rides for me till the end, and I think, when she saw how focused I was in music, that she realized this is not a phase. She saw me working till the wee hours in the morning making music.

Diandra: What is your mom’s favorite song of yours?

Rauw: She has a few. My older ones she does not like because of the cursing. (he laughs) She loves “Fantasia” and she loves my song with Nicky Jam “Que Le De.”

Diandra: Do you have any films or books that inspire you?

Rauw: That is hard because I am the type of person that gets so pumped up by films. I saw the Avengers and the next day started hitting the gym. (he laughs) I was at the gym at 6AM. I think in the future, though, I will do a song about a fantasy film. I’ll do it because it inspires me.

Diandra: And for my final Q! I was really thinking about Puerto Rico and how artistic and influential it is in that art world throughout history and internationally, and I have to ask, what do you think makes Puerto Rico so creative?

Rauw: (breathes in) Wow! I genuinely do not know what makes this island so special for so much talent to come from us. So many artists and music genres and sports stars! I just don’t know. I believe Puerto Rico is magic. I think it blessed, and I think, in some ways, it is our culture. We are such a happy people. We have so many stories, and each person here will live so many experiences. I don’t know. I have never been able to decipher our secret. Maybe, it is the tropical life; it inspires music. So many great artists have come from us, and, we see them, and we want to follow them.  I think it is like in Brazil, you have soccer and in the US, you have basketball. Every country has their “something,” and, for us, it is music. So many people here want to be in music and it is in our blood.
