Diandra Interviews Samantha Sanchez: No Me Importa

Sometimes, I look at Youtube like a “tester” for potential artists. It is where they dip their toes by doing silly videos with friends or cool cover songs, check the comments section for public reception, and then decide it is time to become a full-blown artist. In a way, I understand. Youtube is a world of SO MANY people trying to be seen and heard, whether it is as reviewers of stars or the persons trying to become one. For Samatha Sanchez, her youtube channel became a platform for people to know her as a person, so that when she introduced herself as a star, it was the equivalent to a friend graduating college; now she was off to make her career. In her debut No Me Importa, Samantha surprised fans with her style but, in our interview, she discusses being genre-less and even boundless in her genuine love for fans and music.

Diandra: How are you feeling transitioning from Youtube to Music Charts?

Samantha: You know, I thought I was going to be really nervous, but I have been focusing on myself like, “Okay! Just take a breather!” So, I am doing okay. To be honest, I am a shy person. It is because it is me and the camera, that I am not as shy, but music does make me nervous.

Diandra: I saw the No Me Importa video Samantha, and that is not a shy woman?

Samantha: (she laughs) That is what people think! How can you be shy with that song? And I am like, “I really don’t know!” (she laughs) Me doing music is something I really care about. I am a nerd for music. I am not a nerd for anything else, not even school, but music catches my eye. I can’t explain it. So when people say, “Sing for us!” I am like, “No!” (she laughs). But it is a new chapter, and I have a lot of practice. I am excited.

Diandra: Whose music do you most admire?

Samantha: Rihanna is my biggest inspiration. Frank Ocean! Rosalia! I love people that are not afraid to be different, which is why I want to try different genres. They put their creativity in their music.

Diandra: Why did you choose No Me Importa as your debut single?

Samantha: It was a decision between me and my team because we felt like the song was going to cause a reaction. Good or Bad! Whether people loved it or not, we knew they would feel something about it. This song is not like anything playing right now. People really expected me to come out with a Reggaeton. While I am going to do that, eventually, but I did not want to start out like that. I wanted to start out with something different; something people did not expect from me. It has an energy to it that says, “This is me! I am not afraid to be different! To try!” If your like it or not, “No Me Importa.”

Diandra: So when you think of No Me Importa, what about it is you or, at least, surprised you in what it says about you?

Samantha: When I first released it, I was so scared. This is so important to me and I had to tell myself, “You are doing this, Sammy! This is happening!” So it was like let’s see how they will react. It is such a powerful song, and some people have been like, “Yes! This is how I feel!” Then there are others who are like, “This is not you!” That is that magic of making music. I have gotten to absorb their reactions, and it has been totally cool. When I got to 1 million I was like,”What! Is this happening!” Some people enjoy the song, and some are studying it. They are judging my baby, and it is a feeling i have never felt.

Diandra: Do you think the artists that you mentioned, part of their longevity, is because they are so different?

Samantha: I don’t know if it so much about longevity as much as why are you trying to be anyone else. It is just not possible, you are you. You are amazing. I feel like I have always been the “different girl.” I was always the goofy. A rebel but not “rebellious” but like a clown. I just want to be different because I am different.

Diandra: You really are so silly and bright. There is something about you that can’t hide. Do you feel like music was your embracing of that? Like you are shy but you can’t hide.

Samantha: Maybe, shy is not the right word. It is these nerves that hit me, and I start sweating, and I am like, “Damn! What is happening to me?!” This is really important to me. I see myself doing music for the rest of my life, which is why I want to learn and try different things. I have tried to be such a perfectionist, especially because, in the industry, you are compared to others. So I was trying to be perfect, but then I got my team, and they were like, “Stop!” and I was like “Okay!” (she laughs) Just be me.

Diandra: So going from “solo” as a Youtuber to having a team, how do you feel different?

Samantha: Phew! It is VERY different! When I was starting, they were like, “We have timelines. We need this by this day.” And I’m like, “I’m a Youtuber! I post when I post.” There was this tension like, “Okay! You have to focus!” Because, being on Youtube, you are your own boss so it is nt easy always keeping up with posting content. Yet, having a group of people telling you, “Keep it up! You are doing well!” is such a great help. It really motivates me. I appreciate then so much because that is the push I needed. It is about working with responsibility.

Diandra: Do you feel more powerful. Because going from a boss of yourself to the boss of a team is what most “self-bosses” desire.

Samantha: You see, I’m shy for those things. When I feel l need something, and I know how to do it, then I will do it myself. I work at a restaurant and that, along with Youtube, has shown me that nobody is going to show you how you want to show yourself. When I would put up a video, whether it was me sad or happy, people would say, “Oh! That is not that funny!” But I was just showing how I was, “This is me!”

Diandra: What is your favorite part of your music journey?

Samantha: In the studio, we have a lot of fun. It is like a hair salon. We call it “Tea Time” because it is just about spilling the tea. My best friend, Samantha, write songs and I’m with Vito, whose producing, and the connection is so good. For two hours, we just talk and then we get to the song, and it really works for us. I love it so much. We really have so much fun. My mother even just visited.

Diandra: What are some random facts about you?

Samantha: I always have to be doing something, even if it is cleaning. I cannot be still.

Eating! I love eating! And I love mixing flavors like sweet and salty!

I always fall asleep in movies. Avatar is my favorite movie though.
