Album Review: Troye Sivan Is In A Dream
In a dream? In a nightmare? In both? Like Tori Kelly, Troye Sivan’s In A Dream EP is perfection born in quarantine. It seriously provides some of his best work within 6 tracks, and leaves you salivating for more from Sivan, especially because he has managed to make pop meet the pandemic. Perhaps, he has given us pandemic pop?
Troye Sivan – Take Yourself Home (Lyric Video)
The thing about pop music is that it is inherently exuberant. It is built on a “yes we can” and “let’s try” mentality, of which even in its newest, more emotional iterations, like anxiety pop, still carry its hopefulness. Yet, nowadays, for a lot of people, hope is a tricky, rarely seen friend. Thus, Sivan’s EP is laced with loss, yearning, and heartbreak, wrapped in house, techno, 80’s glam pop; rouging pain with red makeup and I am here for it. He has somehow blended the quietness people are feeling with an upbeat, building tempo that is not too strong or bombarding. People still want to dance and feel joy, but they want to feel simpler, easier versions of it and Sivan delivers.

From “Easy” to “STUD,” I felt like this album was moving me across roads while keeping me still: kind of like a car. Technically, you are sitting still in a seat, while the vehicle you are in speeds away. In some ways, that is how Sivan saw this EP. While most of us are stuck, in both situation and sentiment, music has become our only way of leaving, which is exactly what this album does. You press play and a door opens, of which Sivan’s voice feels like gasoline; it pumps up you up but flows fluidly. His vocality is so warm and effortless, which, again, are qualities people WANT right now! Thus, In A Dream, for sure, is one of the best EPs of 2020.
