Concert Review: Leon Bridges Romances Radio City Music Hall

When it comes to performing, Leon Bridges hails back to the era of Chuck Berry or James Brown; when a performer relied only on the pure energy of his spirit to entertain. Sure, there was moody lighting and a giant LB displayed behind him. Yet, nothing could overpower the tenacity of his soul and his voice.

Surrounded by people singing his songs to love, Bridges was well aware that his audience was divided between the singles, like himself, and the “Boo’d up” as he called them. He wasn’t wrong; patrons whipped out their phones to document every one of his dances as if even his body was a lyric of love. Tracks like, “If It Feels Good (Then It Must Be),” “Coming Home,” and “Flowers” ricocheted through the evening to remind people something we often forget: Love is fun.

At times, we speak of love like a job. We discuss relationships like work, and then sing to how devastated we we are when the work did not work out. Yet, it feels befitting that Bridges reveres Brown and Berry’s sonic style because he also is inspired by their perspective; love isn’t work when it is true. Sure, you have to learn how to maintain a relationship, but true love makes such maintenance feel like a ride not a pit stop. From “Better Man” to “Hold On,” Bridges voice soothed love scars and the jaded like cocoa butter on a wound. All you have to do is let his rich, natural voice sink into your thick skin, and you will remember we all go back to love because its goodness teaches us our greatness. Hence, his show’s message was electrically optimistic, which is why all he needed was to sing.
