Northside Fest Artist Close-Ups: Topaz Jones Is The Next Big Thing

You always hear that term: Next Big Thing! Yet, sometimes, it really does encompass means. Catching a bit of Topaz Jones show at MHOW, I felt like I had, secretly, walked into the final concert hall show of someone who would be rocking arenas by next year. In some ways, when we say next big thing, we really talk about someone who is both now and the future of a genre, and Topaz Jones is that for Hip Hop.

From Aminé to even Flatbush Zombies, a fun, eccentricity has infused within Hip Hop that can be traced to George Clinton’s funkadelic swag. Topaz follows suit by giving a brightness to his sound and performance that made his concert a happy one. People danced and wooed as he waltzed around the whole stage like he was The Purple One. Yes, The “Prince” of Hip Hop Dance; guiding people to let loose with the biggest smile.

Topaz has a flow that felt like Q-Tip and Consequence leant him some vocal chords, and told him, “Do what you must!” What he did was turn conscientiousness into colorfulness, which is explains why Kamau smoothly fell into his act. He brings mindfulness with a silliness that proves “being woke” is a fun process. It is not just about knowing social stats as much as realizing you are social being meant to give and receive fun from this world your living in. Thus, tracks like “Tropicana” and “Toothache”, along with a few unreleased, felt good for your soul and your moving feet.

Not many rap artists can play Stranger Things’ theme song, and declare a sick track to Winona Ryder. THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN! Yet, again, Topaz Jones has a charm and amiability to him that makes him unstoppably welcoming. You want to hang out and hear the kids who can tell you about every pop culture reference, bad date experience, and needed social movement. Topaz Jones knows and does it all.
