Concert Review: Pentatonix Bring The Revive The Christmas Spirit At Beacon Theatre
Pentatonix have ARRIVED to revive the holiday soul of Christmas. It might be just me, but I have not felt the “Christmas Spirit” as strongly this year. 2017 has not been one of holiday cheering, and, within an eye-blink, December 24/ Santa Claus will be her. Thus, if you are in need of a holiday “pick- me – up”, I highly recommend Pentatonix’s “A Very Pentatonix Christmas” Tour for a night to remember your blessings. Hence, I believe the night could be best summed up by newest member Matt Sallee’s “Thanks!” to the crowd. Five years ago he was coming in second with his Acapella group, of which the reward was to watch Pentatonix perform. Now, he is is their singing bass. Like their show, Pentatonix proved Christmas is about remembering the little surprises life has for you that you did not imagine for yourself.

Sure, we all have a Christmas list with about 20 million things we are unrealistic about getting (Winning Lotto Tickets!). Yet, Pentatonix represent how life takes you places you did not know you wanted to go. Bringing their Christmas Tour to NYC, it was amazing to see thin once Youtube group become a Sold-OUT phenomena. As they waltzed into the crowd, I looked at the smiling faces and even the gasping tears in awe. They had already declared their fandom THE BEST, but I will add on that they are the most loyal and avid. Yet, even I was moved by their covers of “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing”, “Mary, Did You Know?”, and “O Come All Ye Faithful”. These songs go beyond original… they covered epics. They define the very essence of Christmas, and, once heard, bring you back to the holiday. Thus, I grew admire Pentatonix talent with their capacity to make these universal songs feel like their personal displays of vocality. Moreover, having no openers, an intermission, and a few “UnChristmas tracks” like an homage to Michael Jackson and Daft Punk, allowed the night to feel like a theatre show rather than a concert. We were there to see five spirit summon The Holiday/ Holy Spirit, and they did.

When you are in a group, you have to both stand out and blend in, to which each member did exactly that. You had Mitch Grassi blasting notes with an unnatural prowess, and Kirstin Maldonado belting like she was doing an homage to Whitney Houston. Then, you had human orchestra Kevin Olusola making me wonder how he can have more instruments in his vocal register than a symphony, while Matt Sallee could not contain his own giddiness to be on the stage, especially when Santa came out to do his own dance. Lastly, but certainly not last, was Scott Hoying whose voice and presence is as dominant as an anchor; vital to assuring every ship/ song stays in place. Frankly, their dynamics as a group are riveting because they truly are 100% based on the capacity of their voice. They are so meticulous, crisp, and clean in every single run that they do that, you are unsurprised why over a decade since their formation, they are still here!
