Artist Close-Up: Cry Baby Shed No Tears In 1991
I get a lot of requests, and, sometimes, I feel like its fate that guides me to hearing a great artist. There are SO MANY talented ones that I am both excited and nervous for the future. Where can so many GOOD people fit? Welp, according to Cry Baby, they fit in 1991. Yes, people are talented, but new and fun are completely different ball-games. For 1991, is their standout.
When you hear a song that is so light-hearted, you feel shameless, that is magic. Sometimes, I feel like R&B and Pop get “haters,” for some reason, because they feel so good. Why not sing to love like you are K-CI & Jojo or be a “Barbie Girl.” In 1991, the group is running around in space suits acting like Earth is a human discovery. Their lyrics are telling Prince, “Why party like it’s 1999? Let’s take it to 1991.” From sound to Jamie Gray’s voice, the entire track feels incredibly vibrant and so fun as if that feeling comes easy. Again, people act like happiness is cheesy, as if the feeling is so common, we are NOT living under the Trump Administration.
Cry Baby – 1991 [Official Music Video]
When asked what inspired the track, “As far as the song goes “1991” was the embodiment of just saying “fuck it let’s have some fun.” The rap verse was a great example as we weren’t even sure we were gonna be able to pull that off, but our drummer Matt actually called me over the phone when I was at work and rapped it trying to convince us it should make the record. Naturally our music greatly draws from a lot of areas in the 90’s, but this was our first stab at hip hop. Pushing us out of our comfort zone in that regard was really challenging, but also super fun when it all came together in the end!Her stunning voice feels so present for track that asks you turn back time.
