Concert Review: Gayle Is TEACHING Us A New Alphabet
If you can make telling someone to “shove it” feeling like a magical, mystical middle finger to be flipped on a sunny day, then “I love you.” I mean that! To colorfully tell the world to screw itself, and artful present that message is a true gift that Gayle mastered at Mercury.
Of course, TikTok nation was alive and present to hear the massive hit. “ABCDE F-U,” but were presented by a plethora of rising and future hits with the same, resonating message, “If you are not along for my ride then enjoy me running over you.” It is a message that feels oddly poignant in a world still trying to decipher what we would let go, fight for, and fight off. In essence, we are a bunch Maddies and Cassies trying to decide whether hopping onto Lexi’s Play is the only way to finally settle our lingering scores. That type of dynamic is what made Gayle resonate with classic rockstars like, Blondie and Joan Jett.
To be frank, I’m trying to recall true, modern-day rock stars. I feel like, because there are so many artist fusing genres that, many, become anamorphic or beautiful amalgamated. In essence, it is hard to find anyone that is PURE ROCK N’ ROLL, at least in sound, when compared to vibes. Heck! Even Harry Styles gives a rocker vibe while living on an 80s synth-wave. Yet, Gayle throughout the entire show, felt like a rock-star about to torch the very building she was performing in. People LOVED THAT ENERGY because, nowadays, who doesn’t feel like combusting their life to see if, in the ashes, something more exciting can be born.
Is that a toxic thought? To think you need to scorch earth to rebuild a new world? Perhaps…. but it is common, especially in the explosive battleground known at Twitter Spaces and TikTok’s algorithm. It can feel like, no matter where you turn betrayal or bashing occurs, and Gayle’s music felt like the bleeding hearts whose openness to love does not mean they do not know how to clench their fists.
