Concert Review: Middle Kids Are Your Friends At Irving Plaza
I think I say this in every review of Middle Kids, but they truly are your best friends. Their lax chemistry builds a show where their talent shines, in part, because they feel like you and your friends hiding in some party corner laughing and gossiping. At Irving Plaza, they, immediately, set up the inside jokes and inner songs that play when you feel like your friends are you family.
I think we have all grown up a little but are also ready to be “kids” again. It is kind of like, “Okay, 2020 you taught me a lot about myself, now open up the bars to full capacity again!” It is a curious thing to see how we introduce or even let go of our newer selves just to re-socialize. Are we ready to be new? How do we keep our “old?” (Lol!) I guess, in some ways, that was the theme of their music, like in songs “Stacking Chairs” and “Today, We’re The Greatest:” how to be reintroduced into the same world when you and your friends are different but you still want to have a good time.
For me, what feels most endearing about Middle Kids is that they are so calmly cool. Lead singer Hannah Joy is one of the funniest, chillest people to coyly proclaim they are shy. If anything, 2020 was a glorious year for introverts and home-bodies that were happy to stay in with No Guilty FOMO. She laughingly discussed being terrified of partying while wanting to party, and how 2020 was a weird longing to do what most terrifies you…. socialize. Hence, it was no surprise her voice radiated the beauty and balance it takes to feel like the biggest imposter while being yourself.
Let’s be honest! Part of why we hold ourselves back is that we confuse authenticity for “posing” and like the best version of ourselves to being a liar. THAT is why we like our friends… they make us feel our best is real. With them we are funny, smart, talented, and we are Middle Kids. Hence, Middle Kids ware our friends at Irving Plaza.
