Concert Review: Saleka Sings To Heartbreak
Sometimes, we choose the wrong lovers and friends because it takes a LONG time to realize wolves come in sheep clothing. I am guilty of drinking up a kind word like it was water only to end up parched in a bad relationship. Evil really knows how to veil itself like a regular, good guy, and, for women, whom are still raised to see getting a man as a goal, getting “yourself” can feel like a clash. For Saleka, who will RETURN to Rockwood on November 18 and December 9, finding you and finding “the one” has been like a war for love.
As she rippled her voice like tiny waterfalls falling upon notes, her voice felt delicately full like, a raindrop that hit the ground like a storm. She closed her eyes and tried to feel each song as if she was personally writing them, for us, at the moment. The crowd was pack with Indians and NYU’ers, most family and friends, that wanted to celebrate her journey in seeing herself as enough in every way. No song went without some type of explanation to the heartbreak, joy, and conquered insecurity that wrote it, but they all connected under one theme: self-worth. With inspirations like, Lauryn Hill, Amy Winehouse, and Nina Simone; all phenomenal songwriters that wrote for hope while being inspired by their pain.
Nothing like a supportive crowd as you sing to learning to support yourself! Her voice truly was like a butterfly: colorful and winged. Yet, it was her stories of her grandma praying over lemons for luck and her vulnerability as she discussed how the pandemic and her choices in love have molded how she loves herself. For women, such a journey is important to hear, especially from someone on the rise. On the outside, she may seem to have it all: beauty, talent, and the access to present those attributes to the world. Yet, the world can enter your heart. It can shut out your thoughts about yourself, even it can influence it. Moreover, it cannot take you over, though it tries, in how you choose for yourself. For Saleka, she embodied that bitter truth into a sweet song. For More Information On Saleka Click Here.
