Album Review: Tall Heights Reveal Pretty Colors For Your Actions
Tall Heights Pretty Colors For Your Actions (PCFYA) is George Harrison meets Queen; it is epically spiritual, sonically surreal, and grounded in the folk tales of being human. Similar to both artists, Tall Heights takes you to places in your mind and soul that turn life into an illusion; one where you decide what you see as powerful. Yet, such a sonic “twist” or “perspective” is to be expected. If Neptune was an introduction of two men trying to help the world, Pretty Colors For Your Actions is two guys trying to heal it.
I have seen Tall Heights a few times, and watched them grow and impress crowds with their humor and heart. They emanate from the stage that they love the world, but hate how it hurts itself, which Neptune’s tracks hinted at. Yet, call it a sign of the times, but Pretty Colors For Your Actions feels like their full-fledged step into saying, “We fight for love and peace: not only desire it.” You listen to “Not Like It Was,” “Roanoke,” or “Red Bird,” and feel like they are speaking about the intersections between the world’s political climate and people’s moral temperatures.
Tall Heights – The Deep End (Official Video)
Tall Heights are fearlessly embracing their compassionate verses over stringed, prodigal arrangements. Like it or not, the choices we make politically and socially do measure who we are morally, and the desired distinction between the two is impossible. You are your choices, and, lyrically, Tall Heights prod listeners to choose better for themselves, for the ones they love, and for the ones they pray lead them to love. Having done a tour with Ben Folds, you can hear the change in Tall Heights’ sound. It is more confident, crisper, and willing to be melodically mystical.
Tall Heights – Not Like It Was (Lyric Video)
I always say energy speaks, and you can hear it in Tim Harrington and Paul Wright’s harmonies. From “White Frost” to “Over Now,” their voices are officially welded together; like two, strong metal bars singed together to build their songs’ infrastructure. It is magical to hear how their symphonies whirl around their combined voices as if music orbits voices like planets orbit the sun. Their greater knowledge and trust in how they can vocally empower their verses transforms tracks like, “Oslo” and “House On Fire” into human fables; meant to give both music and motivations to their listeners.
