Album Review: Tegan And Sara Celebrate Ten Years In “The Con X: Covers”
It has been ten years since Tegan And Sara debuted into the world with The Con. This magnificent record not only put the duo “on the music map”, but it gave the world a roadmap to their distinct sound and lyrical style. Such a record should be celebrated, and even covered. Thus, on October 20, The Con X: Covers, will be released unto your blessed ears.
Tegan and Sara present The Con X: Covers – CHVRCHES – Call it Off
Cyndi Lauper, Bleachers, Vivek Shraya, CHVRCHES, Ryan Adams, and MUNA are amongst the “few” names dropping in to give their take on Tegan And Sara’s music. What is most interesting is that they not only changed the vocality of the songs, but their composition and message. Of course, the original is still heard in essence, but they refresh Tegan And Sara’s classic album to show that these artists have always been and should be admired for their adaptability. Yes, I know that “adaptable” can sound “lame” as a compliment or an insinuation of unoriginal. Yet, Tegan and Sara are 100% unique, and have been able to course thorough their 10 year career because they pick up rising sounds and music trends to add their own twists. Hence, covers like Shura’s “The Con”, which has a seedy, noir feel, and Ruth B’s transformational, piano ballad “I Was Married” are powerful introductions into a fact; this album is really good. Hayley Williams turns “Nineteen” into an electro love letter that shimmers Tegan And Sara as songwriters, while City And Color’s “Hop And Plane” reveals how perfect their music can be for acoustic versions and the folksy melancholia. These ladies know how to make a song brim with loss, but also the hope for another gain, especially at love.

Sometimes, you need to cover an artist to rediscover them. Personally, I think covers are a huge flattery, and a sign your song has spoken to someone to the point they think their voice can be a powerful beacon for its message. From Cindi Lauper’s “Back In Your Head” to PVRIS’s “Are You Ten Years Ago”, The Con X: Covers is a vibrant reminder that Tegan And Sara are artists that inspire others with their romantic and vulnerable tracks on life, which includes an unreleased demo of their song “Miami”.
