Concert Review: Tennis Are My 70s Fantasy At BK Steel
One of my FAVORITE DUOS OF ALL TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Tennis makes me feel like a plushy, purple teddy bear in someone’s 1970’s Brady Bunch themed bedroom, and I love it. Okay, that was super specific, but they did not pack up Brooklyn Steel because they are not fulfilling some type of imagined delicacy.
As they scoped through a hefty setlist that included, “Runner,” “Bad Girls,” and “Need Your Love, ”my soul felt like it was a getting an oil massage. The lavender was dripping, and, suddenly, all these emotions that could feel icky in real life like, dating a toxic d-bag, was all part of my life’s glamorous, seventies themed novela. It was hard not to dream of myself in a chiffon dress and hair rollers, lighting a cig, as I pondered why I left my dream of becoming a singer for “this man.” Okay, I am really driving the fantasy element of a Tennis show, in part, because that is why you go.
I felt this with Sylvan Esso, as well, in that these are artists where it does not matter if they were the most charming performers or the quietest because you legit came to hear their music with a mass of people as if this was a LARPing event. Yes, there is an element of role-playing that goes into Tennis’ music, an overall dynamic that makes their concert closer, in vibe, to a Comic Con convention for CW shows. Frankly, IT IS AMAZING! IMAGINE IT! Going to a costumed event where everyone got to reenact their fave teen dramas.
I CANNOT REITERATE ENOUGH HOW MUCH I LOVE TENNIS! (Not the sport) I am hyper self-conscious that my words, to some, might be a promotion of unicorns, rainbows, and everything deemed sappy, but …. it is. Similar to Charil XCX and even Lana Del Rey, Tennis sell an aesthetic; a hyper fantasy of a past reality that feels cinematic upon listen and touchable upon concert. To put it plainly, their show is cool. For More Information On Tennis Click Here.
