TV Review: Amazon Prime Finds A Winner With Mr. And Mrs. Smith Series
Out Feb. 2, I was SUPER impressed with Amazon Prime´s Mr. and Mrs. Smith, but I came in with high hopes. Re- Created by Donald Glover, both him and Maya Erskine, are some of the most talented, inventive writers in the Hollywood scene, which is currently struggling on the original content front. From reboots and remakes or book to film saturation, Hollywood has become a little dry when it comes to originality. While this series is based on the film/concept, this Mr. and Mrs. Smith is so new, refreshing, and exciting that it is more than a ¨re-make¨…. It is a RE-DO.
We find our Mr. and Mrs. Smith to be apart of a rather seedy-spy organization that has no qualms pairing their spies up like Tinder, and completely deleting them if they fail enough missions. Every week our John (Glover) and Jane (Erskine) get assigned a new adventure with celebrity guests playing the eccentric personalities we would expect ultra-wealthy people who have caught government attention to have, cue odd, human dog fetishes. Both leads have phenomenal, grounded chemistry; making their characters feel exceedingly charming but also approachable and accessible. In some ways, the embody and elaborate the spy trope of young men and women from ¨broken¨ or impoverished backgrounds that are scooped to kill in exchange for money, travel, and sex. These two people have their baggage, but part of why they start falling for each other is that they believe and feed the stability their ¨pretend¨ marriage can give.
In a world where commitment-phobia is going up so much so, it might get its own vaccine, the sweetness of Mr. and Mrs. Smith is how it becomes an odd celebration and love letter to finding the one, even if under crazy, espionage circumstances. These are two people that have avoided the concept of home because ti triggers them, but have found in their partnership a regaining of hope and even attraction to such a term. Seeing them fall for each other and heal, while confronting bad guys and, inevitably, failing missions is so endearing.
Mr. And Mrs.Smith will go down as one of the best, new shows of 2024. It sparkles with wit, heart, and a ripe balance between cool action sequences and good conversations. You dive into the spirits of its leads thanks to its incredibly strong cast and fun-ridden observance on what it means to build a life with someone through thick and thin… and a few assassination attempts.
