Album 2016: Insecure’s Soundtrack Is As Good As The Show
I love Insecure. Done and Done. Nothing more to say. The show is brilliant, funny, smart, thoughtful. It is truly amazing in how casually it encompasses life for what it is: a beautiful mess. Its capacity to show life as a melting pot of issues and joys comes from having one of the best soundtracks for a television show.
Every time I watch Insecure, I find myself googling every song it played afterwards. With Solange Knowles as the show’s music supervisor, I am unsurprised that Insecure has managed to find music that matches its quiet artfulness. Both show and soundtrack are subtle in their magic. This is not to say that it does not have club bangers like “D2B (Dick 2 Bomb)” or “Top Down”. Yet, like the show, the soundtrack moves its audience for its ability to captivate every human emotion. One minute you are bouncing to beats like life has never had a single problem like in “Palm Trees” or “Small Talk”, and then you are confronting serious spiritual/ social issues like, “Hold On” or “Conflict Of A Man”. Hence, for a soundtrack, it truly measures up to what the show does: capture humanity.
I always say life is a rollercoaster. It has ups, down, twists, and turns that are not always easy to catch unsurprised. It can leave you dizzy and it can leave you laughing, but the point is that life should not leave you behind. As you watch the characters of Insecure try to overcome their literal insecurities and figure out how not to feel so behind in terms of who they want and should be, it is the wonderful songs of this soundtrack that play. Thus, Insecure OST has a secret advantage in being the music of the characters you love to watch. You want to dance with Issa, discuss your love life with Molly, and hold a prayer circle over Lawrence and his struggles with employment.
