Album Review: Actress Gives Music A Series Of Images In “AZD”

It’s hard to describe Az ctress new album, AZD, because it’s one of those records but you have to here to believe. The closest scenario I can seemingly associated with it’s when you turn on the television but it starts to change channels on its own. You wonder if you are, accidentally, sitting on the remote or someone is is controlling it. Well, in this scenario, indie electronica superstar, Actress, has got the control, and whether you want you to watch a show or see through white noise is dependent on his whims.

What I love most about AZD is that it is a weird album. It is not about wanting to truly understand or put labels upon, which is why actress has gained such a cult following and acclaim. The British musician may have crossed the pond because he never really saw it there. For Actress, Music has no boundaries which is why he is defined as electronica by default. In truth, he is like a maniacal TV swirling through the sonics/images that may have connection and may not, but certainly keep you wondering if they do. Songs such as, “Nimbus”, “Untitled”, ‘Faure In Chrome” sound like you have turned a computer on, and, for some reason, it cannot reach your desktop. Instead, you see lines and hear sounds of the laptop trying to boot itself. Yes, I know this is a humorous comparison, but it plays upon Actress fantastical, digital album. For however much you can turn a screen on, do you, actually, see something? From the dancing “ Fantasy Synth”, the machine pressed “Dancing In The Smoke”, and the whimsical lightness of “CYN”, there is never an instant where you are not intrigued by Actress’ creativity.

I think what most stumps and fascinates me about Actress’ Nimbus is that like and dislike are not this record’s primary aim, which is  an unusual concept in the “grading scale” of life. Something is either good or bad or likable or unlikable are, usually, the only two rates. Yes, Actress aims for memorability and experience that go on beyond those tethers. NIMBUS makes you dream and move mentally in a way that is not about liking impressions as much as lasting ones. For More Information On Actress and To Buy AZD On April 14 Click Here.
