Album Review: Angus & Julia Stone Make “Snow” Feel Like Summer

I have to laugh at myself. I think nearly every song from Angus & Julia Stone’s Snow had me saying, “Awww, I love this one!”. For nearly an hour, it was a non-stop quote fest between “This is so sweet!” and “Ugh, this is so romantic!’ For being an album titled Snow, it feels like a soundtrack for a summer romance.
Angus & Julia Stone – Chateau

Every guitar melody in Snow feels like you are holding hands and strolling down the beach with your new love! The tenderness of being in love feels framed by Julia Stone; who sings lyrics as if they were made in the sun and rayed over us in happy shine. She is so soft and plush in tracks such as, “Make It Out Alive” and “Snow”, that she reminds listeners of the whimsical beauty of love. Sometimes, you forget how this emotion seeps into your everyday life and offers you balance in the little things like your lover’s smile, laying with them to watch your favorite show, or buying from their fave Chinese place before you see them. Lyrically, Angus and Julia Stone seem to approach how epic and invincible you feel when love enters your daily routine, and how broken you become when it recedes. Tracks like “Cellar Door” and “Chateau” give Angus the opportunity to shine vocally. He draws and drawls his voice between Jeff Buckley and Glen Hansard. You simply feel he got a laundry list of every vocalist that turns lyrics into spiritual vibrations, and said, “I am going to be a name in that list!”. He certainly is as he matches the succulent calm of Julia’s vocals with a more quiet turbulence. If she treats her voice like a sun-ray than he treats his like a friendly tornado; it wistfully billows through notes with a desire to show nature’s power. When both vocalists unite in harmony such as in, “My House Your House” and “Sleep Alone”, the summon Love for her very real existence; for better or worse.
