Album Review: Annie Hart Shows Her Intuition In Impossible Accomplice

Imagine opening a door to a room, and then getting locked in it. A scary thought? Yet, that room was not just any “room”. It was four walls that played the to the melancholy, longing, happiness and simple desires that moved within you in dreams and situations. In Impossible Accomplice, Annie Hart (one-third of Au Revoir Simone) shows that the walls we build in our heart can be intuitive screens.

When you think of “walls”, you think of “blocking” or “guarding”, which is not a wrong concept. Yet, the walls we put up in our hearts are also displays, of what triggers and heals us. “On The Way Down”, “My Heart”, and “Hard To Be Still” are perfectly crafted pop songs that show simple is always better when trying to see how you work. For Hart, simplifying is an action that stems from perspective, of which she is trying to simplify her reactions and the perceived motives of her lover in “Would You Answer”,”Run To You”, and “I Don’t Want Your Love”. These songs engulf listeners through Hart’s meticulous, synthesized arrangements. You feel as each synth-wave is speaking to you, and showing you the layers of love you have hardened within yourself. This self-aware vibe is blushed by the rouge that is Hart’s voice. She pats and pets her words with an succulent, 80’s sensibility and an undercurrent of vulnerability. After all, she is exposing the visceral and virtuous feelings that come from someone who does not want to be still in life’s situations, but certainly needs a moment to be still in her own presence, i.e.”Breathing Underwater” and “Hard To Be Still”.
