Album Review: Dan Croll Shows Emerging Adulthood Is A Good Thing

Emerging Adulthood is the new album from Dan Croll, and also the story of my life. Adulthood? What is that? It sounds like an oncoming, horrifying tsunami that I have to accept and swim through with all my strength. Yet, if you are like me or Dan Croll, you feel like adults are just grown-up children trying to act like the pain of “No!” grows less with age. Emerging Adulthood embracing that maturity is a process, and the anxiety and love that comes from it.
Dan Croll – Away From Today

I do not know when or where I will become an adult, but Dan Croll is embracing “adulting”. The irony of Emerging Adulthood is that it is a louder, more electro record than Dan’s last music outing, Sweet Disarray. Thus, proving that “adulting” does not mean a silencing of your personality and pleasures. Songs such as, “Bad Boy”, “Away From Today”, and “One Of US” play to the notion that growing in your life, as a person, means taking seriously the notion of happiness and love. No more is it a fleeting moment or relationship; now it is a standard goal and a constant process you have to invest in. The perspective is wise and dreamy, which are not two words I ever thought to put together. Yet, for Dan Croll, emerging adulthood is a journey to learning to live life better, and accepting a few hiccups. Tracks like, “Educate” and “Sometimes When I’m Lonely”, are mood-inducing tracks that make you want to turn into your feelings and accept them as a part of your being, for better or worse. This “vibe”/ message does give resonance to Dan Croll’s appearance lik,e an “old soul” in style and presence. Hence, his new music does not lose its connection to his more folkish music manner. Instead, it moves into a folk- electronica territory where no analog or beat can diminish Croll’s insightfulness.
Dan Croll – Bad Boy

Croll’s voice swims through tracks “Tokyo” and “January” to give emotions as it they are feedbacks on your life. He has voice that is immaculate no matter what wave of sentiment or rhythms infuses with it. In this sense, Emerging Adulthood is a staple that Croll’s voice can go anywhere musically because of its inherent clarity and charm, which goes to show as a person he can do the same.
