Album Review: Bebe Rexha Turns “Expectations” Into Commandments
Expectations might be the perfect, debut title for Bebe Rexha because she has a lot of them to meet. Her ferocity as a “take no prisoners” kind of gal has enraptured her solid following of men and women who love the “Cardi B” mentality; I am who I am so deal with it! Thus, Expectations runs with this mindset into a cool series of tracks that could easily top the charts.
What I love about Expectations is that it is pure pop! Done! Tracks like, “Steady”, “I Got You,” “Sad,” and “Souls” feel like hits; as if they were made for the very notion of you putting them on blast, singing them with your girls, and acting like you will never read an insufficient funds tag on your savings account. Yes, Bebe Rexha makes you invincible in the face of your real world problems because she is pure escapism. Even tracks like, “Pillow” “Knees,”and “Grace”, that draw out a more pensive Bebe, as she ponders the needs of love, still have a pop factory vibe that shows, even at her lowest, this woman keeps it moving.
Bebe Rexha – Ferrari [Vertical Video]
From Ariana Grande to Camila Cabello, Rexha’s vocality is surprisingly wider and more powerful than what her released singles, “Ferrari” and “I’m A Mess,” might allude. Hence, her album feels like a masterclass on how to get instant fans; for those that buy it, you learn about how unlimited her talent is. Like the artists previously mentioned, when you have a strong voice, in pop, you might get the “pocketed treatment,” which is when you are allowed to show your higher range in sporadic pockets of riffing notes. After all, gone are the ballad albums where Mariah Carey could just sing 12 highly, ornate odes to love. Instead, songs such as, “Mine” and “Shining Star,” are the deliciously rhythmic, badass oaths to love we get for our modern era.
Bebe Rexha – I’m A Mess (Official Lyric Video)
While I said Expectations was a good title for Bebe Rexha’s record, after listening, it should be Commands. Bebe is fierce in how she plants her voice into beats that grit and sully like a woman who can change life’s dirtiest paths into glamorous runways.
