Album Review: Christina Aguilera Is Free To Love In “Liberation”

Admittedly, Christina Aguilera cannot get a bad album review. Honestly? Have you heard her voice? She could sing a diaper commercial, and most of us would say, “Riveting!” Thus, vocally, her new album, Liberation, does not fail. Yet, what it does is turn this pop queen, who has transformed her image multiple times, into what feels like her most authentic voice.

“Authentic” is a popular term these days, and it may not seem that pop jams represent your “authenticity”. Yet, what if our “fantasy” self or that “superhero” version of us, that we often dream of, is actually the real us. Liberation plays to that notion. From sex to self, for Christina Aguilera, the woman that owns her desires to feel and give joy is being herself. In essence, fun is freedom and because of that joy is your rightful, human inheritance. Thus, you, certainly, feel like getting your own happiness, especially after troubles, in tracks such as, “Right Moves”, “Like I Do”, “Unless, It’s With You,”and, of course, “Liberation.”

While Liberation feels like X-tina’s most powerful album, in allowing her voice and thoughts to range freely, its core message is more empowering than what appears. In a world where people are eager to define how others should live, and find it is okay to destroy another person’s pursuit of happiness because it make him or her uncomfortable, Liberation’s ultimate message is GROW UP! Who, how, where, and when people love is none of your business, but you make it your own when you fail to love yourself. Hence, lyrically, Liberation feels like Christina’s love letter to her own body, heart, mind, and those that wanted to love it, as well. GET IT GIRL!!!!!!!

Tracks like “Sick of Sittin”, “Accelerate”, and “Deserve” are succulent in rhythms and in pushing that Christina Aguilera is a legend that has earned her right to say what she wants, i.e. “Maria” or “Fall In Line.” As I mentioned with Eternal Summers, never underestimate or rather forget that a beat is a like a bed, but in the lyrics are where the heart rests. Aguilera’s Liberation solidifies her permanent status as a music icon who can go and come as she pleases because her voice, in both thought and power, will always be as desired as it is distinct.
