Album Review: Drake’s Scorpion Shows The Duality of Loneliness

Drake gets A LOT of HATE. Yet, in truth, we cannot hate him so much because he is one of the most successful artists of all time. Even the roughest guy considers Drake a “guilty pleasure” because he strikes, like a Scorpion, for the emotionality of living. While Hip Hop, in general, can aim for the materialism and societal workings that disrupt a spirit, Drake aims for the daily interactions; the ones where guys and gals are simply trying to figure each other out.

While Scorpion is divided between the A Side (Rap) and B-Side (R&B), to be frank, both are just Drake. The A Side has more up-tempo tracks, but, in both, Drake ebbs and flows between rapping and singing as he always does. The B-Side feels more contemplative and inward like Drake is simply thinking about how to stay connected to people rather than his success/ things. Thus, Drake’s album has another division that might go unnoticed: the duality of loneliness.
Drake – Nice For What

The B-Side is the “Drake We Love & Understand”; the one that wants to text an ex, does not know why he can’t find eternal love, and wants to have a “Ratchet Happy Birthday.” Meanwhile, A- Side shows the loneliness of fame. The irony is that whether your massively popular or completely alone in a corner, you can still be isolated. From the eagerness to post on social media images of a better life to the jealously of fellow artists/ persons who believe they should have his blessings, Drake shows success is as lonely as failure, and can still leave you pining for that B-Side or rather the warmth of a lover.
Drake – I’m Upset

Sonically, Scorpion is one of Drake’s best because he has conglomerated his years of success into a varied display of sounds. From Nothing Was The Same to More Life, you can hear every album in this one. Moreover, Drake is known as a “caption rapper”; the Hip Hop artist who gives you the wisest, or at least, the best quotes for your Instagram posts. While some may hate on Drake for his sensitivity or for being too “light” to be called Hip Hop, in 2018, we need to stop boxing ourselves. Lord knows others will have no problem boxing you in, but Drake’s mass success proves it is natural to be lonely when you are one of the few being yourself.
